  • RE: Appletell reviews Konnet's iCrado iDevice cradle [Appletell]
It's available at all the usual suspects: Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect etc.
  • RE: Appletell reviews the G-DRIVE Q external hard drive [Appletell]
If there are two ports, you are certainly allowed to use both. This product will not act as an extender of sorts, but there's nothing restricting you from using the two ports on an iMac.
  • RE: Appletell reviews the Plextor PX-610U for Mac [Appletell]
It's an 8X burner. It can both rip and burn quite easily. The battery is the main uniqueness though. I honestly haven't worn the batter down yet, and I'm not quite sure how. The idea is that the drive saves up extra energy when it's not burning or reading and stores it in the battery. You'd have to burn burn burn to get it to dry up. Suffice to say, it will work for nearly everyone's burning needs and won't take up 2 USB ports.
  • RE: Appletell reviews the DoubleSight Smart USB Monitor DS-70U [Appletell]
It sounds like your install went without issue. You'd know if there was a problem. When I first tried to install it, it would never complete. Instead, it would say something like, error, install could not be completed. I honestly don't remember the exact wording. But if the install finished, it should be fine. Now, as to why it shows up blank, I really have no idea. The only idea I'd have is to investigate the System Preferences in Display and see if anything can be remedied there. Perhaps there is a setting that's throwing things off. Good luck.
  • RE: Appletell reviews the DoubleSight Smart USB Monitor DS-70U [Appletell]
I'm really sorry for the delay, I've been quite busy as of late. Yes, I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I used driver version 10.5b5, but I imagine that the newest would be the best. I have this unit plugged into a powered USB hub, with both cables. While it did work with just the data cable, I wouldn't recommend this. I hope that helps, but I believe that's all standard. The hardest part for me was just to get the driver to install. After that, I've had almost no issues. Obviously, I'd recommend all the standard like restarting the machine, unplugging and replugging in the cables, etc. But I'm betting you've already done all of that a hundred times.
  • RE: Appletell reviews the DoubleSight Smart USB Monitor DS-70U [Appletell]
Jon, I believe I've been using 1.5b4 or 5 so far. To install the driver you need to reboot your MacBook and make sure it's in 32 bit mode by holding the numbers 3 and 2 on your keyboard. When it's done booting you should be able to actually finish an installation of the driver. After that, reboot again and plug in the monitor. I hope it works for you. I've also been told they are really trying hard to finalize the driver. I really hope they clear all of this up, it's unnecessarily hard right now.
  • RE: New iMacs and Mac Minis By October 9th? [Appletell]
Todd, have they actually charged you? I thought it was the policy of most stores to not actually charge until the unit is shipped. Either way, if it makes you feel any better, I've been waiting on a pre-ordered camera for nearly a month now. 2 weeks before it was released and at least a week after. Still not shipped. Hopefully all will end well with your order and maybe you'll end up happy that they waited.
  • RE: How-to video: iDevice app management in iTunes 9 [Appletell]
Oh nice, thanks for the extra tips! I definitely wouldn't have guessed the first one.
  • RE: Snow Leopard as we go; disk space [Appletell]
Kirk, Actually, Snow Leopard departs from other operating systems in how it reports file sizes and storage capacities. Previously, OS's calculate bytes in base 2, but Snow Leopard calculates sizes in base 10 (the way retailers of HDDs do it). That's a different of about 24 bytes per megabyte, and an additional 24 megabytes for every gigabyte.
  • RE: Free Apps roundup for August 21st, 2009 [Appletell]
I'm a bit self conscious about my lithp.... Thanks.
  • RE: TomTom cradle to enable GPS for iPod touch and other apps [Appletell]
I've begged TomTom for more details, but the best I've heard is sometime before the end of summer. This would have me assuming it will be announced before Labor Day. Who knows about availability though.
  • RE: Possible iTunes 9 screenshots [Appletell]
That of course is just my of speculation, but I'd agree. Unless Apple does something particularly useful with this shared playlist thing, like enable full streaming of shared songs over the net, it will likely end up being useless. I'm not holding my breath.
  • RE: TomTom cradle to enable GPS for iPod touch and other apps [Appletell]
The cradle has GPS built in to enhance GPS, but as long as your iPod touch is plugged in, it will be able to route you using that GPS chip. GPS does not rely on an internet connection and neither do most of the navigation apps, so an internet connection is not necessary except for maybe things like traffic.
  • RE: Appletell reviews Navigon's MobileNavigator North America for iPhone [Appletell]
You make a very good point, one that hadn't really crossed my mind, so I thank you for that. I asked Navigon about this, and it's coming in the not too distant future, like you anticipated. The reason I didn't give it much thought is that I have never been very impressed by real time traffic data on GPS units. Then again, I don't live in Chicago, New York or the like. There is traffic data available for my area on units that support this, I've just never experienced better routing as a result. I guess it's one of those features that you know whether you need it or not. Either way, it shouldn't be too too long before you get this feature.
  • RE: Appletell reviews EyeTV Hybrid 2009 Edition with EyeTV 3.1 [Appletell]
I've never tested an EyeTV 250 plus, so I'm not completely familiar with it. As far as I understand it has RCA ports built in. This means you can convert from another device, like maybe a VHS player to a digital format. If you don't intend to do that conversion, then I'd say go with the Hybrid.
  • RE: Appletell reviews HyperMac's External MacBook Power Battery [Appletell]
I'm really sorry to hear that. I meant to try to replicate your problem but I haven't had a chance. I only used the battery to recharge my MacBook while it was asleep. Basically I used it until the battery was spent then charged it up while I was away doing something else, so I didn't really use the notebook often while it was one the HyperMac battery and the times I did were for quick browsing, not audio.
  • RE: Appletell reviews EyeTV Hybrid 2009 Edition with EyeTV 3.1 [Appletell]
Forgive me for being unfamiliar with DirectTV. It is my understanding that the EyeTV does not work with DirecTV.
  • RE: Appletell reviews AirDrives headphones for iPhone [Appletell]
Sure, noise gets out, but you have to remember that the whole point of these is that they don't drown out background noise, so you likely won't be listening to them very loud. It's comparable to earbuds, if not just a touch louder.
  • RE: Appletell reviews NeatReceipts for Mac [Appletell]
By the way, this is currently on sale for around $200
  • RE: iPhone OS 3.0: Everything you need to know...so far [Appletell]
I'm not sure I understand your question the way you intend Claudio. iPhone OS 3.0 most certainly will work with all iPod touches. Some features will not work, obviously MMS, SMS etc. One feature that will work with the 2nd generation touch is bluetooth and all of the new things that come with that like A2DP, sending files, etc. The 2nd gen touch has a bluetooth chip built in, but what never used or activated previously.
  • RE: Source claims next gen iPhone has video capabilities [Appletell]
I agree, the idea of a Pro iPhone is silly.... unless it does full 1080p 60hz video, then I'll consider. One model is all we need. Sometimes I even wonder if it's really necessary to have different levels of storage. Apple is the type of company that would restrict that too. Ever once and a while I find myself reading a long article, or a PDF, and I long to have a device larger than the iPhone to read lying down. At the same time, I want it to be more functional than an iPhone. It has to have ports, and real OSX apps, not iPhone apps.
  • RE: TeleNav bringing GPS navigation to iPhone 3G [Appletell]
Good news guys. The wait is almost over. Apple has announced that they will finally be allowing turn by turn GPS apps on the app store when iPhone OS 3.0 is released. You can expect that around June, and I'm sure the apps will come around that time as well. Who else is excitied? I know I am.
  • RE: Appletell reviews Labyrinth3D and Wooden Labyrinth 3D for iPhone and iPod touch [Appletell]
Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes it's hard to keep the iTunes links straight. I'm betting a more descriptive linking scheme wouldn't be the worst idea ever.
  • RE: Appletell reviews Focal XS 2.1 Satellite Speakers [Appletell]
Like I said in the review, I ignored price in the rating. I think this is appropriate since these speakers are clearly not aimed at someone who's hunting for a bargain. Obviously the economy is not in the shape where your average joe can just drop $600 on speakers. I would have had a very hard time rating these if I had to factor in price. It's too difficult to put a price on audio quality since it's so subjective. Will your MacBook play your tunes for you? Yup. Will it do it to the quality of these? Not even close, but how much that matters to each and every person is not for me to determine. What I can say is this, if you have serious cash to drop on speakers for your Mac, this is where you want to do it.
  • RE: iPhone OS 3.0: Everything you need to know...so far [Appletell]
Unfortunately, yes. Because of some accounting rules, Apple is unable to add significant amounts of new features to the iPod touch without charging for the value it adds. iPhone users don't have to pay this because they pay a monthly fee with the expectation of additional value. Your previous purchase of the 2.0 upgrade will not be enough for the 3.0 since it is still a significant change. That said, I think this update will be well worth it.
  • RE: Appletell unboxing: The new Mac Mini [Appletell]
It's not that I require less power, it's that I need a machine that's on 24/7. I'm going to be using it as a Home Theatre Mac on my living room tv. Think of it like a non-crippled Apple TV. I'll be able to record shows with my EyeTV Hybrid with it while not distracting myself on the MacBook Pro, as a recording machine of sorts for my guitar and drums and I have so many USB devices that it will be so nice to unload some of them on a different machine. Believe it or not, two 4-port USB hubs don't run very well together (and don't even think about two 7-port hubs). I've also played with the idea of hosting my personal webpage with it.
  • RE: Appletell unboxing: The new Mac Mini [Appletell]
I bought my unibody MacBook Pro when they were first released, which was a bit longer ago, but fairly recent. This Mac serves a different purpose though.
  • RE: Why the double monitor port Mac mini is likely [Appletell]
I'm thinking Apple is going to redesign the whole case, probably all brushed aluminum. It's just been too long since the last time that they updated the Mini that it needs some extra attention. I also disagree with the dual monitor ports idea. Having mini DVI only helps a handful of people, almost of which I believe are previous Mac owners. You have to have an adapter either way. And Apple has never cared before if you had to "adapt" yourself to a new product. No separate mouse buttons on the new MacBooks, no firewire for MacBooks.... Apple doesn't really care.
  • RE: Why Apple can do whatever the hell they want to [Appletell]
See that's half the point I'm trying to make though. I haven't had any hands on time with the Palm Pre, no secret there. But why should I. Palm hasn't given me, a person who loves gadgets, a compelling reason to abandon my iPhone and its apps. I've paid to get out of cell contracts in the past, so I'm not afraid of that. I am afraid that Palm will be out of business next year though.
  • RE: GarageBand '09 - First Look [Appletell]
I understand your frustration with the system. Surely it is not perfect. I'd really like to see Garageband incorporate a "Keyboard Hero" mode. It actually would be incredibly easy for them to do, but I doubt they would do it the way I would. MIDI is a file format that stores note information so a computer can play back the song with virtual instruments. MIDI songs are extremely easy to find online. It's too bad you can't import them and have their Main parts be played by you on the keyboard. Then the keys could fall from the sky Guitar Hero style. This, of course, wouldn't teach you how to read music, but it would be fun. It also wouldn't make Apple money in their lessons store. I do hope they update Garageband to address at least some of your issues though.
  • RE: Appletell reviews Moshi's Zefyr Pro [Appletell]
Hey thanks Userblah, that was a really great idea! I let my MBP run normally all day, recorded the temps then hooked up the Zefyr for a good half an hour. Here's the data from iStat (it's somewhat surprising, though ultimately not very scientific). MBP w/ Zefyr HD 94 92 CPU A 176 166 Enclosure Base 88 90 Enclosure Base 2 88 90 Enclosure Base 3 85 85 GPU 149 151 GPU Diode 171 169 GPU Heatsink 130 128 So you can see that the CPU definitely reflects a 10 degree change, though some temps actually went up. You have to remember that this isn't the temperature of the bottom of the Zefyr, so that is likely much lower than the bottom of the MBP case. Still very interesting though.
  • RE: Appletell announces "Appletellcast" weekly podcast [update] [Appletell]
    Thanks man!
  • RE: Is Apple prepping a new 16 GB iPhone? [Appletell]
I agree, it does look kind of like a case, and a neat one at that. I'd probably buy it. But there are two things that keep me from thinking it's a case. First, there's that Apple bit at the bottom. But it wouldn't be that hard to get the same effect with Photoshop. Second, the hole for the camera is recessed, which would allow for the piece of glass embedded in the casing. Either way, I hope Apple moves away from shiny plastic on any future iPhones.
  • RE: Appletell reviews Killer Pool for iPhone, iPod touch [Appletell]
Hey just wanted to mention that there's now a Lite version available to try out before you buy the full version. Here's the link. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=301096853&mt=8
  • RE: CES sells out of "Mac space," is Macworld doomed? [Appletell]
Hey I know! How about we move it to Texas. It's more central, it will be cheaper to do and just by bringing it to Texas it'll be bigger. And thus, all of the problems are solved. I can just see it now... Macworld Texas 2010 - The Biggest Yet Oooo, I've got another idea. Let's just get Apple to attend.
  • RE: Graphics upgrade for "iPhone 3?" [Appletell]
I want a lot of things in the next iPhone. I'd like it to be faster, with more memory for processing etc. I think it should have an upgraded camera (more megapixels) and one facing forward for self pics and video chat. Apple also needs to get with the picture and enable more Bluetooth features, like keyboards, headphones and file transfers. Not to mention Copy & Paste along with Push Notifications. And why can't we have turn by turn navigation? I mean come on!
