| Bio: | Adam’s first computer was a Macintosh Plus. After a stint on the dark side of Windows, Adam came back to the Mac in 2006 with an eMac, which he quickly outgrew. Adam’s setup is constantly changing, as he is always buying the latest and greatest of Apple products. He also does design work, and has created the logos of quite a few websites, in addition to making a couple icon sets. Adam is generally active all over the web and can be found in many places. He is easily contacted via email. |

- There's an eject button on the keyboard, you can drag a disk to the trash, there's an eject icon next to disks in the finder, etc. All easier than using disk utility. Macs have a right click same as windows, the difference is that it's not necessary -no unique commands should be hidden there.
- I'm not even going to bother knocking your "points" down one by one, but as you clearly evidence, just because you run every operating system known to man doesn't mean you know anything about them :/
- Read again, not talking about more software, I'm talking about age of software. The Mac has far better software as far as I'm concerned.
- Oops. It appears that the site *is* accepting comments even though I'm getting an error to the contrary.
- You just havent' learned all of the Mac's tricks. Hit F9 or F3 on newer Macs and watch your windows tile. Much better than the cluttered taskbar.
- You just haven't figures out all the Mac's tricks. Hit F9 (or F3 on newer macs) to see your windows tile before you. Way better than the cluttered taskbar.
- What would my other interface choice be? How about real buttons like before. Much easier.
- Actually, cancel that, it's more expensive than before!
- It costs the same. There will be third party headphones, and they will require an adapter, probably an extra $20-$30 from Apple. If you pick up a last gen shuffle, I bet you know exactly what all the buttons do. Quick quiz, don't cheat: How do you fast forward on the new shuffle? Without looking at the manual, I doubt you would know without trial and error.
- You realize that there is no way to actually listen to this episode, as the iTunes feed has only one episode, and there is no link to the mp3 file in the post?
- RE: Why does Apple hate numbers? [Appletell]Except that there have been numeric keypads on every Apple standalone keyboard until the aluminum Bluetooth one a year ago, and there continues to be a number pad option.
- Compare the new iMac with the old iMac. The old iMac had a dedicated card. New one doesn't. That's really all that matters is that that feature regressed.
- iMacs have never been upgradeable. That's why it's best to have a good card in there to being with. I'm not saying the iMac will be slow or anywhere near unusable. The point of the article, which many of you seemed to overlook, is the fact that Apple has never used integrated/shared graphics in any iMac except for the $999 version, which they don't have anymore. By putting it into not just one, but TWO low-end models, it's questionable how much "better" these iMacs are relative to the price. I, for one, would like to get a nice graphics card for $1500.
- RE: Why does Apple hate numbers? [Appletell]Oh, I have a Bluetooth keyboard and love it. I never use a number pad. But I still question the applicability of that concept to the wired keyboard, and feel like ther may be a few in-store buyers who want a number pad but don't get it.
- Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure Inquistor (as well as most plug ins) has never been supported. I know for a fact that 1Password is basically a hack, and Apple has never supported it, so blaming them for it "breaking" isn't really possible.
- Yes, Betas are unfinished. But this is a public beta. There have been many developer only betas released to test these critical issues. By releasing a public beta, a company should be sure that any bugs that could arise won't affect system wide components. By the way, after 45 minutes with a great AppleCare rep, we figured out that the Safari 4 installer had inadvertently enabled web proxies. After unchecking this in the advanced tab of AirPort preferences, everything was working fine.
- RE: iTunes is Apple's worst consumer product [Appletell]You seem angry. And yet, you are agreeing with most of everything I've said. Re-read please.
- RE: The Finder is an idiot [Appletell]Which works... only when a file is ACTUALLY in use. But often Finder will tell me files are in use when they aren't. And Secure Empty doesn't do anything then.
- RE: iTunes is Apple's worst consumer product [Appletell]Microsoft can't be responsible for the slowness of an application they had no hand in making.
- RE: iTunes is Apple's worst consumer product [Appletell]Of course it would run faster on a fresh install or something, but none of my other programs have problems being snappy, and I can say that through quite a few Macs and installations, iTunes has consistently been a slow and relatively unresponsive application.
- RE: iTunes is Apple's worst consumer product [Appletell]Or because people like being loud on the internet. I stand by the title. I can't think of another product, even Apple TV, that is as bogged down as iTunes. Apple TV may be feature limited, but it does what it says it does without being slow.
- RE: iTunes is Apple's worst consumer product [Appletell]Ok, you all seem to have largely missed the point here. iTunes is a great program; there is no other like it. And no doubt it is successful. But the point of this article is to say that the way it is built needs cleanup. It's framework could use a good dusting, so that the outer shell looks nice and works snappily. Because right now, it doesnt. Freezing while an iPod connects, jittery scrolling while album art loads, etc. It's the little things.
- No one complains when someone doesn't want to buy a Mac. The complainers are always the Windows fanboys or simply anti-Mac fanboys who can't afford a Mac or have decided to hold a grudge against a company for some inane reason. What Psystar is doing is infringing upon copyright by modifying Apple's Leopard. The case would be a lot less black and white if Psystar were simply installing Leopard with absolutely no modification, but it is being modified in order to work on the custom PCs that Psystar makes. Psystar is the one ripping us off here, by the way. The machines they sell are nothing more than overpriced, unbranded custom PCs which can be had for a lot cheaper. You really want to run Mac OS X on a non-Mac, there's no need to go through them.
- RE: Hands On - Apple 24" LED Display [Appletell]Spam.
- RE: Hands On - Apple 24" LED Display [Appletell]Did you get any word on backwards compatibility with older-gen (read: less than one month old) MacBook/Pros?
- Adam, I can't speak for Quicken, but all of your other problems are just you not taking the time to learn the basics of the Mac OS. Safari and Firefox will automatically add the www. and .com to the address. You don't even need to use CTRL/Enter. Ctrl Alt Delete on the Mac is Cmd-Opt-Esc. Also, the Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor) Is a great Task Manager. And you absolutely can backspace... have you ever tried pushing the button labeled "Delete"? It does the exact same thing as the backspace key. And fn-backspace does Forward Delete on smaller keyboards.
- RE: Three ways iPod Touch gets it wrong [Appletell]I should add that while current Macs can run Flash seemingly smoothly, it takes a whole lot more overhead than on Windows, and you'll often her the fans rev up.
- RE: Three ways iPod Touch gets it wrong [Appletell]Nope. You can ask pretty much anyone who has knowledge of the Flash platform and its OS X relationship and they will agree you do NOT want it on the iPod or iPhone. Test it out. An 800 MHz G4 with 512 MB of RAM can't play a YouTube video smoothly, while an old Pentium Windows machine can. Flash was never built right for OS X.
- RE: Three ways iPod Touch gets it wrong [Appletell]If Apple put Flash on the iPod, you would be complaining way more about that than you do about it's absence. It already runs like crap on the full-fledged computers and OSes from Apple, it would be criminal to put it on the iPod.
- Safari has been and always will be a Mac browser. Regardless of what Apple says, it obviously doesn't care that much about getting Safari big marketshare on Windows. Apple software is by and large a joke on Windows. It still remains the best browser on the Mac, though. It is the fastest, best looking, and most out of the way. Firefox is slower, more bloated, and all it offers over Safari that I see is add-ons, which I find are more annoying than anything. Safari 4 will once again blow everything else out of the water. The one downfall with Safari is that it's release cycle is OS-linked, so we don't see new versions and features until new OSes are released.
- Yeah that was in there, it might have been accidentally edited. Cmd + , is the preferences shortcut.
- RE: Apple votes no on Proposition 8 [Appletell]Well, as I said I don't want to get involved in a heated debate here, but I think Nico's post says a lot. I don't know that this article, which is about Apple more so than the proposition, is the best place to be putting in voter info about Prop 8.
- RE: Apple votes no on Proposition 8 [Appletell]not to get into a morals debate here, but why would a company's stance on the issues affect tour decision to purchase what were apparently fine products before?
- You are entirely correct, very poor choice of wording on my part.
- Based on this email, any computer with DVI out would work, and likely mini DVI too. This covers Apples entire line. It will only be a matter of time before all displays are LED but no one knows how much time that will take.
- I'd rather not buy a warranty for the express reason the the product feels so crappy I know I'll need it. Ditto with backups.
- Nah, I havent craved one since I had the opportunity to use one. Felt like crap, least sturdy thing I have ever held. Wouldn't trust it with my data for a minute.
- It's a new 52 week low. The last time it was this low was in May 2007 before the original iPhone introduction.
- Um.. he has a point. In a month's time, these apps will serve no purpose, and most are pretty useless. He never said anything about the elections being useless, and a personal attack isn't warranted.
- RE: What Apple TV needs to change to be wanted [Appletell]Yes, but TiVo requires cable. I'm avoiding cable like the plague here.
