- Apple says the Magic Mouse ships with two AA batteries in the box, so it'll be battery powered.
- Interesting point about the Games genre there, Barry - I'm amazed as to where that's gone. There seems to be a few people having issue's with Genius, so we'll see how that turns out over the next few days. It likely won't be long before 9.0.1 is released if there are little bugs around the place like that.
- I'm also surprised that there's no 64-bit version for Snow Leopard, Barry, since's its one of few native applications that isn't taking full advantage of 64-bit processing power. Still, it feels a little quicker after the update. I'm sure a 64-bit version won't be too far around the corner.
- RE: Snow Leopard as we go; the first week [Appletell]I can certainly see why some people feel that Snow Leopard is the equivalent of a Service Pack for Windows, but even though we can't necessarily see the improvements and additions made to Mac OS X, there's still a lot that's been upgraded and improved. It's more paving the way for the future, rather than 'the future'. Still, hope you get a smooth install. Let us know how it goes.
- RE: Snow Leopard: 64 bits explained [Appletell]Current hardware will still be limiting in some cases. Mac Pro's will be expandable, but laptops and the iMac and Mac Mini will not. But future upgrades to the hardware will mean greater amounts of RAM as the OS will support it.
- RE: Light-years ahead? I don't think so. [Appletell]Apple are a trusted brand for their entire product line. People know the iPhone just works, and it looks great and has amazing features. I don't need to be amazed, I love my iPhone 3G - it does everything I want my phone to do. I'm saying that the statment of 'light-years ahead' didn't really appear. The updates, while great, didn't really put the iPhone 'light-years ahead' of it's competition.
- RE: Light-years ahead? I don't think so. [Appletell]That's not what I'm saying. When comparing the iPhone's technology to it's competitors, the community behind it gives it an edge. The OS is brilliant, and people are saying the Palm's WebOS is also brilliant. The design of the iPhone is amazing - the Palm Pre looks great too. Apple certainly isn't doing a bad job. Of course there's more to it than 50,000 applications and a literal logo, but up against competitors, the technology is similar. But Palm doesn't have so many applications available yet (of course, still very early days) and I've yet to come across a 'Palm fanboy'. Everyone agrees that the iPhone 3G is one of the best handsets available, but why? 2MP camera - that's dated technology for a mobile phone these days. Touch-screen? Most top handsets feature a touch-screen. The OS originally made it stand out from the crowd, as well as the design. Palm Pre has given serious competition to the iPhone - and a specs list would put the two about par. So what do I feel gives the iPhone an edge at this point? A huge community, and the trusted Apple brand.
- RE: WWDC rumor roundup [Appletell]@ Rychass - I agree with you. Although when Apple would've began plans for a new iPhone, the Pre's launch date wouldn't have been known - and I'd imagine we hadn't seen the Pre at all at that point. I'm fairly confident we'll see some new hardware from Apple, though. As regards to the functions you've listed, even if Apple doesn't bring out a new phone itself, those functions will be part of iPhone OS 3.0, and will be available to download for current iPhone users for free (iPod touch will have to pay). If they pull it off, great! If they don't - if there's something missing, Palm is right behind them with fierce competition.
- RE: MagSafe - design over safety? [Appletell]@sfmitch - I see where you're coming from. The number of people affected is a low number in perspective. The chances of being affected by this are low, but its still possible. The results could prove disastrous if you weren't around when it happened. It's still something Apple needs to think about though.
- I'm glad Apple are finally introducing this, but I do hope they use it correctly. There have been some strange judgements on accepting apps into the App Store - lets hope the ratings process work out right.
- RE: The Apple Tablet, or bad photoshopping? [Appletell]Thanks for your replies, you've spotted some interesting details - things that, as you've said, Apple would avoid. @Olternaut I now realize the age of the image, but with a tablet once again in the rumor mill, I feel it is still relevant, if at the least interesting. I'd expect some of the details to be similar to what Apple may release in the summer, if at all.
- Great find Josh! Sounds like the perfect course to follow to give me a basic understanding in iPhone development, if nothing else. I've been learning VB6 (I know, it's horrible) for the past few months at college, but I really want to learn something more, widely used. Objective-C and Java are high on my list. Can't wait for this, cheers!
- RE: Contract-free iPhone available now [Appletell]@Boca - I understand what you're saying. Yes, I'm British writing for an American website. I use American English as much as possible when writing, but very occasionally I may slip up. I don't take the easy route and write in my natural British English, but instead use American spellings and grammar. The error made here is noted and will not appear again, although it is quite a minor detail, wouldn't you say?
- RE: Appletell reviews the iPod shuffle (3rd gen) [Appletell]I was looking to get an iPod shuffle just before this came out. After it did, I went for the previous version. First, because of the price, but second because of buttons! Shuffle's are used a lot for sport - I don't want to be wasting time trying to find small controls on the earbud cable, and as soon as someone yanks the cord, the buttons will slowly begin to cease. It's great design, nice product. Some people will love it, but in this case, not all.
- RE: Contract-free iPhone available now [Appletell]@Boca Boi 786 - Thanks for pointing that out. As obvious as you made it sound, it can be hard to distinguish. In conversation, people would usually say "Oh, Apple are releasing that new phone!" Although the correct way would be to us 'is'. Always learning :)
- RE: The new Mac mini: first look [Appletell]@Rob. Thats one of the worst things for UK consumers buying from Apple. There's no signs of an exchange rate. For the parts involved, the markup for the £499 Mac Mini must be quite decent for Apple. I wouldn't expect them to go extremely low (towards Eee territory), but something more affordable by the mass markets, and they'd likely sell more in the long run - earning more profit.
- RE: More to come from Apple? [Appletell]@Nico, people would be quite annoyed if Apple brought out yet another version of the Mac Mini in just three months time. It's very confusing why they wouldn't update the design. For something in the technology field to stay the same for two years is fairly uncommon. A quick-paced sector needs a constant stream. @Mark You're right - there's nothing wrong with the current design. But then I guess there was nothing wrong with the white unibody MacBook design. A little refresh every so often wouldn't hurt. It's not like Apple to allow a product to fall behind - Apple products are known for their design. I guess we'll have to see what happens ultimately. Although for now, the Mac Mini does the job well.
- RE: The new Mac mini: first look [Appletell]The prices in the UK are stupid. For what you get, £500 is very steep. I don't think I'll be investing in one this time either, but it's still a decent machine all together.
- I haven't had that problem. Well, I wouldn't know, since when ever I try to open Safari 4, it says it closed unexpectedly. I've tried installing about eight times now, and I'm back to 3.2... Disappointed that there are errors like this in the public testing stages, but hey, it's still in beta I guess.
- @Javier - I think Apple will change the design of the Mac Mini this time around. It's been so long since the previous update, it would be a silly idea to keep the aesthetics the same for another 18 months, when it will look really out of date. I feel they will at least update it to use the same material's and manufacturing idea's as the MacBook range. I guess we'll find out for sure next month!
- I guess I'd quite like true applications, such as one for Facebook. There's many available for Twitter, and other than EventBox, there's not a lot for Facebook. But the thing that comes to my mind, is if all these social networking tools move to applications, what would be left for Safari? Wikipedia app, Facebook, Twitter, Google search etc.. They could all be applications. Its an interesting idea, I guess it depends on what the mass-market wants with their online experience.
- RE: Why no WiFi syncing on the iPhone? [Appletell]WiFi syncing is something I've thought about for the iPhone/iPod touch for quite some time. It would be a great feature. The only downside I can think of, other than the bandwidth, is battery power. My dock only connects via USB, so when it's not plugged in, it's not charging. If I was syncing a movie across, it would probably be quite heavy on the battery power. I don't think it would take over completely from cable syncing just yet, but it would be nice to have the option, a quick WiFi sync to keep everything up to date would be great.
- I agree, Rob. Why it can list the route, actually tell you where you are in real-time, but not put the two together to update the route directions, is beyond me. When you become within say, 50 yards of a junction, update it. From there, it wouldn't be very hard to add in a voice command at the same time. The basic workings are there, but for some reason, they just haven't put 2 and 2 together yet. Whether they allow this application into the App Store, and on what grounds they provide, it may show some light as to whether they have plans of their own to add these features into Maps.
- RE: 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro now shipping [Appletell]As far as I'm aware, there's been no official change from Apple. The 19th is still the target date for the MacBook Pro's to hit the retail stores and be available as normal. Only pre-ordered MB Pro's have been delivered, simply a few days early.
- RE: Will there ever be an iPhone killer? [Appletell]Apple didn't rush into phone market, but we expected they would at some time. I can imagine, as Kirk said, that Apple plan to stay, and its not in their nature to have a "second-best" device. I'm looking forward to seeing the iPhone progress over time, and as technology itself improves. I'm sure that whatever the industry throws at Apple, it'll throw it back twice as good, but with an Apple logo on it.
- Really good article, Adam! I've never really thought about it like that before, but as you say, everything seems "normal". There's nothing that sounds amazing. Maybe with Steve Jobs' health as it is, if he passed the baton to someone else while at the same time Apple refreshing their entire lines, it would signify a new beginning almost. A lot of people seem worried that when Job's leaves, Apple will slowly decline. That shouldn't be the case, and with something as you suggest, it would reassure people and set the base for a whole new level of computing.
- RE: Potential for an Apple netbook? [Appletell]Yes, you're right. But a device such as this would probably replace the MacBook Air. All Apple say is that they're keeping a close eye on the netbook market, but as yet have no plans to enter it.
- RE: Apple keyboard concept with iPhone Dock [Appletell]Thats a good idea, Adam. A simple application on your iPhone/iPod Touch connects to your Mac and is controlled through the same software as the OLED keys on the keyboard. A simple graphics tablet would be great too!
- RE: How to teach your iPhone custom words [Appletell]This isn't as effective as the reason you stated Jack, but the iPhone also remembers spellings of names in your Contacts list. Although you obviously don't want your contacts looking like a foreign language dictionary, it is a working option to remember words. :)
