What is ZFS?

ZFS

You might have heard of ZFS; power users and geeky types have been going crazy over the rumors of its presence in Leopard. So what exactly does the Zettabyte File System do? In short, it’s a file system, a way of organizing the files residing on your hard drive. Mac OS X Tiger currently uses HFS+ as its default file system.

Robin Harris over at ZDNet blog Storage Bits explains the entire thing in full detail. He details some of the advantages like snapshot backups, self-validating data and easy configuration without the need for complex RAID setups. Check it out if you’re the type who enjoys being in the know.

Leaked: ZFS is Leopard’s Default File System

by Marvin Sum on Jun 9, 2007 at 02:00 PM

We’ve got some juicy Leopard secrets to share. It turns out that Sun Microsystem’s CEO and President, Jonathan Schwartz, announced at a conference held earlier today that Apple is making ZFS the default file system in Leopard.

In Schwartz’s own words: “...you’ll see that Apple is announcing at their Worldwide Developer Conference that ZFS has become the file system in Mac OS X.“ This makes sense because ZFS possesses many advantages over Journaled HFS+, Apple’s current file system.

This is perhaps one of the “Secret Features” that Steve Jobs was touting at WWDC last year. For the die-hard Apple fans, there’s just two more sleeps till the big day, so hang in there!
