iLiberty+ does everything for your iPhone, happy endings

by Alec Feld on Mar 30, 2008 at 11:49 AM

iPhone

I know all I ever talk about is the iPhone, but that’s where the news keeps coming from. Today, it’s specifically coming from an app dubbed iLiberty+. Erica Sadun of iPhone and TUAW fame just got a refurbished (and cheaper) iPhone, and downloaded the app to free her iPhone of Apple’s crippling. In one go, Liberty unlocked and activated her previously jailbroken iPhone (though the app jailbreaks as well). Erica reports some unstableness she experienced while using the app, but nothing too major to stop anyone from successfully tweaking their iPhone. This seems like one of the easiest ways to get all three tasks done at once, as well as a few other fixes and tweaks. So if you’re one of the few people who doesn’t have an unlocked, jailbroken iPhone, grab Liberty+ and tweak away.

UniquePhones puts release of iPhone software unlocking software on hold

by Robert Nelson on Aug 28, 2007 at 02:02 PM

iPhone

As we have seen over the past few days a lot of new information and options for unlocking the iPhone are starting to surface and now that the unlocked iPhone is here it seems AT&T is looking to put a quick end to the party. It took what seems like way to long (although I am sure it was very hard work) to get an announcement about someone unlocking the iPhone and UniquePhones had been set to publicly release the software that would enable everyone to have an unlocked iPhone, however a 3 AM call from AT&T’s legal team have made them put an indefinite hold on that release. The team from UniquePhones have yet to make any proof of the unlock public and have decided to get some legal advise on whether it will be wise to release this software.

Buy your very own unlocked iPhone!

by Greg Healy on Aug 26, 2007 at 12:39 PM

Dr. EvilThere are a few different places to get a cheap iPhone these days, like Apple’s very own refurb store. Though what do you do if you want to travel in a whole different direction? Where do you go to get yourself an expensive iPhone? The most expensive iPhone selling right now is probably this one on eBay.

Of course this iPhone is no run-of-the-mill iPhone. It’s not a hand-grenade or condiment dispenser, but “The World’s Second Unlocked iPhone.” If you want this piece of Apple history in your collection, it costs a mere $99,999,999.00. That number again is ninety-nine million nine-hundred ninety-nine thousand nine-hundred ninety-nine dollars. The owner claims that you just pop in a SIM card of your choice, and the iPhone is good to go. When an update comes and locks the phone once again, the files to re-unlock the phone are included.

So if you have got 100-million lying around and you have absolutely no clue how you should spend it, this might be the auction for you.

Note: If you are really interested in buying the phone, the seller asks that you contact him on his blog. He is pretty sure that most of the bids are fraudulent, and will not be honored.

iPhone unlocked, bad video

by Alec Feld on Aug 22, 2007 at 12:31 PM

Apparently the iPhone has been unlocked via a hardware modification. Sadly, the only proof of this is a video posted to YouTube. The video shows the modder giving out thank you’s, reading a speech he obviously wrote down on paper, and him showing his replaced provider JPEG on his iPhone (which means no proof yet). He then makes a phone call, and takes out a T-Mobile SIM.

Although it is possible that it’s been hacked, this is no true confirmation (he could’ve switched the SIMs when violently ripping the SIM tray out of his iPhone). The modder says that the hardware hack will be released in a week, and that they might have a software hack by then, so hopefully all of these JesusPhones will finally be unlockable.

iPhone unlocked, kind of

by Alec Feld on Aug 9, 2007 at 12:44 AM

iPhone The moment has arrived, the one and only iPhone has successfully been activated on a European mobile network. That’s right, you can now use your JesusPhone with European cell providers using a hacked SIM.

We haven’t tried this trick, but to pull it, off, you’ll need a SIM writer, a blank SIM card, and some patience. This method is quite expensive, as an $80+/- SIM writer is required. After writing information to the blank SIM, that SIM becomes compatible with the iPhone and works with calls, texts, and even EDGE. We heard that this has been tested with Orange UK, so if anyone is really desperate to use their iPhone overseas, now is your chance.
