Vodafone overwhelmed by Aussie iPhone demand

by Mark Rowland on Jun 16, 2008 at 09:10 PM

iphone 3gVodafone, one of two carriers of the new iPhone in Australia, has gotten an average of 40,000 pages views per day on their pre-registration site for the iPhone 3G. Through the site, people can pay for an iPhone and then pick it up at the time of release. Optus, the other Australian iPhone carrier, also has a pre-purchase site. Their site, in fact, has seen so many visitors, that they have closed the site and are no longer offering a pre-order option. “Due to an overwhelming response, we have removed the deposit-taking mechanism from the http://www.optusiphone.com.au website,“ an Optus spokeswoman said.

These overwhelming responses to the 3G iPhone are good signs for Apple’s goal of 10,000,000 units sold by the end of the year. And, for what its worth, Australia will be one of the first countries to receive the iPhone.

Australians to get the fastest 42mbps-capable 3G iPhone

by Arnold Zafra on May 23, 2008 at 09:18 PM

3G iPhone
A Telstra senior executive in Australia revealed that iPhone fans in the country might just be as lucky as American iPhone users, as they will be have the privelege of having the fastest 3G iPhone when it is released some time in June. The executive even confirmed that the new iPhone model might be up and running on a fast 42mbps just in time for the Yuletide Seasons.

Speaking with ChannelNews Australia, the Telstra executive said that the new version of the highly anticipated iPhone will be announced during the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference happening on June 9. After announcing the 3G iPhone during that conference, new iPhone units will start shipping to the US market. ChannelNews also disclosed that they already have some units of the 3G iphone for testing.

This announcement came close on the heels of the recent announcement made by Apple’s Steve Jobs that his company will also be releasing software kits that will let third-party applications freely develop various applications for the iPhone and also for the iPod touch. Likewise, Apple is also lifting the restrictions on the iPhone’s exclusivity to a particular mobile carrier, the same way that Apple has locked out 3rd party application use on the previous iPhones.

Due to these announcements, the anticipation level for the new 3G iPhone continues to rise up. But barring all untowards incidents, Apple may actually be on its way to releasing the new 3G iPhone. One proof of that is the fact that supplies of the old version are starting to run out on most iPhone stores.A sign that Apple may be starting to clean up old stocks of the iPhone in preparation for the release of the 3G version.
