Signal turns your iPhone/iPod Touch into remote

by Mark Rowland on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:30 PM

SignalThe developers over at Alloysoft have officially unveiled their new iTunes remote app.  Signal can turn your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Pocket PC into an advanced remote control for your computer, and functionality isn’t limited to iTunes. Working on either a Mac or a PC, this program gives the user the ability to scroll through libraries and browse supported apps remotely. The following is from a MacNN report

“Taking full advantage of the iPhone and iPod Touch’s two-way wireless capabilities, and combined with the increasing popularity of streaming solutions such as Apple’s Airport Express, Alloysoft claims that Signal is the missing link in many home juke box solutions, allowing users access to their music from anywhere within wireless range, be it “deck, patio, or any room in the house.”

Signal works in a very simple way; when you launch the computer version of the app, you are given a URL which you then put in to MobileSafari and voilĂ !.  You can now have full control over your music from anywhere within Wifi range!

Signal is available now at the Alloysoft website for $25.

New alternative for those who don’t have enough bandwidth from MacWireless

by Josh Holat on Apr 20, 2008 at 09:48 AM

Macwireless adapterThere may be a new competitor in the market when it comes to receiving an internet signal.  Macwireless has announced a new, extremely fast network adapter.  This technology allows up to 16 devices on your network and is transmitted over normal AC wires.

From the product page:

Powerline networking allows you to route your network through the electrical lines that are already built into your home or office. With speeds up to 200 times faster than DSL, this is a great way to get your ethernet network to other floors or rooms in your building, without the need to run wires. Powerline Network Adapters are particularly useful when concrete, metal, or other obstructions in the walls of your home or office block your wireless signals.

Sounds pretty interesting if you ask me and may be a great alternative for those in brick buildings in cities where a Wifi signal is hard to get.  If you have ever used one of these, or a technology like this, let us know.

Airport problems fixed at last with Airport Utility update?

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Mar 12, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Airport
A new update has just been released from Apple. AirPort Base Station Update 2008-001 was released midday Tuesday and as of this time is not available on Apple’s website.

According to Apple, the update “includes general fixes and compatibility updates for the following applications: AirPort Utility, AirPort Disk Utility, [and] AirPort Base Station Agent.”

With luck, this will fix the Airport issues many have been having with Leopard, but it does not appear to be the update hinted at by an Apple representative yesterday.

Download for Windows, Leopard, or Tiger.
