Sweet Apple IIgs laptop mod from Ben Heckendorn
Famous modder Ben Heckendorn is at it again, this time with an Apple IIgs laptop. This laptop is very impressive, and although it may seem dangerous, Ben said it gives off just about as much heat as a pocket calculator (calculators give off heat?). Here are the full specs:
- 15-inch screen
- Original Apple IIgs motherboard
- Custom acrylic keyboard with laser etched keys
- Compact Flash adapter as the hard drive
- Side port access for floppy drive, joystick, and mouse
- Original mouse
- Glowing blue “][” logo
- Built-in stereo speakers
This isn’t Ben’s only awesome creation, be sure to check out his PS3 mod as well. Also, there are more pictures and a video up on his site.
Mac Mini modded into a Mini Mac Pro
In perhaps the best Mac mod I’ve ever seen, Hideo Takano took the Mac Mini and made it into a mini Mac Pro. Perhaps this is the midrange tower we’ve been waiting for?
Takano took a 2.33 GHz Mac Mini with 2 GB of RAM, outfitted it with a 500 GB Hard Drive, and managed to cram it all into a case that looks a lot like the Mac Pro. He even added an extra USB port and a power button to the front.
Unlike most mods, the back of the Mac Mini sits flush with the back of the case, lending a fit and finish that is unseen in any other mod. All the ports are still easily accessible, and it looks so much better than the Mac Mini’s boring case. Check out his website (non- English) here.

Lipstick + iPhone = “iStick”
What do you get when you mash up lipstick and an iPhone? Alexei Mikhailov got an iStick. This concept of a mini multi-media device has large square icons and Coverflow to let you navigate your iStick the Mac way. Not does this look very Apple-like, but it looks like something Apple would release. I would consider it an iPod Shuffle replacement, but more of a next generation iPod Shuffle. Included in this device is the iPod Touch firmware, complete with Wi-Fi for browsing the iTunes Store on a screen no bigger than your thumb.
Hardware iPhone unlocking method; Won’t void your warranty, If you are careful
Personally I wouldn’t attempt this, but then again I have very little interest in an iPhone, and what interest I do have can wait until they actually bring out one worth having. Still if you live in an area that doesn’t have AT&T, or you just plain hate them but must have an iPhone, then you will probably know all about the hardware hack anyway.
The good news? Well the method from the Israeli hackers doesn’t require soldering and if you are careful opening your iPhone, you won’t void the warranty - or so they say. It´’s totally up to you - personally I don’t really see how it can’t.
“The only thing you will need to perform this hardware unlocking hack is a couple of metal pins, cork and a piece of cable. The procedure in the web page is straightforward enough for anyone with enough patience to follow it.”

Doc Macenstein gets his colored iPhone
For those who aren’t happy with the standard silver, black, and chrome color scheme on their iPhone, you may be aware that ColorWare can color your iPhone, for a premium that is. You may know ColorWare for adding some color to your iPod or a few other Apple products. Well, if you wanted to see what ColorWare’s paint jobs will do, the time has come.
Doc Macenstein has posted a gallery of photos of his shiny iPhone, which is now green with envy. Well, at least those viewing this gallery may become envious. The back cover and the dock are “Envy Green” while the base and the chrome is “Carbon,” which makes for a very nice looking combination.
For those who want the complete paint job including the back cover, dock, earbuds, and the “Home” button, it will cost you a pretty penny: $219 all together. In addition to spending $219, you will also have to wait approximately 3 weeks for the paint job to be finished, so we recommend that you have a secondary phone available if you send your own phone in. But your reward will be oh so sweet. For complete gallery of pics, click the link below.
