Notes to iPhone syncing on the way?
TUAW has uncovered, by way of a tipster, a pretty cool rumor-starting dialog in Mail’s Notes app. Normally, in any text editor on the Mac, highlighting some text and hitting the key combo Command + B will make your text bold. If you try this is Notes, however, you get to start a rumor a dialog box that asks you if you really want to make it bold.
So, where’s the rumor? The dialog warns that you must change from plain to rich text mode, which is needed for bold text. It also mentions that the Note will no longer be editable on the iPhone. So, maybe Apple has some syncing planned in the future between the desktop and iPhone versions of Notes. As an added tip, stay away from bold text; apparently that’s just too much for the iPhone to edit, unless you like static bold text, which you very well might. As for italics, don’t even try it; your Mac will just beep at you.
So, maybe I’ll finally be able to stop sending myself e-mails with text in them as a work around for this feature. It’s a pretty small feature, but I’d like it.

Jobs admits Apple was wrong (gasp!) [Update]
According to Ars Technica, Steve Jobs sent an e-mail to Apple employees last night admitting that MobileMe was launched too early.
“It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” said Jobs.
More after the break.
Wonder how MobileMe is doing?
If you’d like to know the current health of Steve Jobs, you might be out of luck. But, if you want to know the health of MobileMe, then you might want to check out the new page called Status in the MobileMe section of Apple’s site. I think the blogger who is responsible for the updates describes it quite well:
Steve Jobs has asked me to write a posting every other day or so to let everyone know what’s happening with MobileMe, and I’m working directly with the MobileMe group to ensure that we keep you really up to date.
So far there are only two posts, and they are both positive, as is be expected. The page does admit to MobileMe’s launch being a “rocky road,” but they are working to get all services up and functioning. E-mail access to the 1% that were blocked is first on their list, and they are making progress. Though it’s sad to hear that any e-mail for those affected between July 18 and 22 may be lost forever.

Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard Server Edition detailed
The Keynote may be the main attraction at WWDC, but there is always much more to come even after Steve leaves the stage. In today’s WWDC happenings, the Apple team detailed the server version of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. The following comes from a MacNN report.
“As with [Consumer Version of Mac OS 10.6], Server will focus on making all aspects of the OS mutlicore-ready through Grand Central, with the option of tapping into GPU power via OpenCL. Because Server will operate on a 64-bit kernel, it should in theory support up to 16TB of RAM.”
iCal, Mail and Address Book will all be receiving upgrades, increasing their speed and stability. Other highlights include the addition of Podcast Producer 2, along with native programs and templates for creating blogs, wikis, mailing lists, and RSS Feeds.

iPhone 2.0 allows pictures to be saved from Safari
Gizmodo has done some looking around iPhone Firmware 2.0, and has found a great feature in the 2.0 Safari. Tapping and holding on an image, as you can currently do with links to see the URL they point to, provides the option of saving the image to your iPhone. Once saved, you can do with it what you like, just as a regular photo. Send it via Mail, set it as a wallpaper, or use it as a contact picture.
This is a great feature and is yet another thing I eagerly await in iPhone firmware 2.0. Now where’s that copy and paste implementation?
Speaking of which, what is wrong with using a simple tap twice, holding on the second tap approach? it seems natural enough. Double tap as if to zoom in, but hold on the second tap, and after a second, you can begin to drag to select text.
How do you think that would work? Have an idea of your own? Sound off below.
Quick Fix for Gmail IMAP-Mail Issues
For those of you who use Gmail IMAP in Mail as I do, you are probably just as annoyed with one thing- the new messages counter always reads twice the actual number. This is because the message is sent to both your inbox and the folder titled “Gmail” or “All Mail”. Just put the following into Script Editor, and voila!
tell application “Mail”
set unreadBox to mailbox “[Gmail]/All Mail” of account “Gmail IMAP”
set unreadCount to unread count of unreadBox
if unreadCount is not 0 then
repeat unreadCount times
set unreadMail to first message of unreadBox whose read status is false
set read status of unreadMail to true
end repeat
end if
end tell
Yahoo Mail! to roll out Safari 3.0 support
Yahoo! Mail will now be supporting Safari 3.0 on the Mac. The classic version of this popular email serving platform already support, however the All-New Yahoo! Mail will be adding supporting for Safari 3.0 in addition to Firefox for Macs. This key online service for many people now has fully accessibility for Apple’s next generation Web browser along with new features:
- Download All for when there are multiple attachments.
- Searching by clicking on the subject or on the sender.
- Arrows for moving to next/previous emails in threads
Even though this has just been update to add compatibility, many users are still seeing bugs. Currently, Yahoo! has no word about support for the iPhone, but for now, this is a great improvement for the Mac community.
Where’s the iPhone two-pane email client?
There are many products and features that get developed inside of Apple and other companies, that never get released. If Steve Jobs, or another one of the top-ranking exec decides that the feature is unnecessary, or just clutters the interface it is cut. One of those features that never saw the light of day, was the iPhone two-pane Mail view. Back at Macworld 2007, when Steve Jobs previewed the iPhone for the world, he showed a second Mail view that would allow you to preview the contents of a Mail message in the same window. After Macworld, he made a comment about not liking this view. Then surprise surprise. When June 29th comes around, the iPhone launches without this view. Was it not working? Or was it just a matter of something Steve Jobs didn’t like, and got cut out of the iPhone?
Which do you prefer: the current view or a two pane view?
