iPhone firmware 2.0.2 is out!

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 18, 2008 at 11:44 PM

iPhone firmware 2.0.2
The latest update from Apple for the iPhone is available on iTunes. Now the iPhone has made it up to version 2.0.2.

So what does it do? Apple lists bug fixes as the only change. I have a feeling this is the fabled 3G reception software fix that was rumored about earlier. And since Apple isn’t showing their cards on this one, we’ll have to wait to hear some reports from those of you who’ve updated.

Syncing your iPhone to iTunes won’t update your software quite yet. If you want the new firmware now (and really unless you’re device is jailbroken, why wouldn’t you?) all you have to do is click the “Check for Updates” button inside of the iPhone section of iTunes.

So go download the new firmware and tell us about your experiences. Is the 3G issue gone? Do programs load faster? Is it all around faster?

Podcast syncing: one huge omission from iPhone

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Aug 14, 2008 at 02:30 PM

PodcastsIn addition to many features Apple overlooked in the YouTube app on the iPhone (think user pages, search results that actually find what you’re looking for, ability to log in and see subscriptions, etc.), Apple made a huge omission to the iPod app on the iPhone and the iPod touch: Podcast Syncing.

Why don’t podcasts update on the road? Apps do. We can buy music on the iTunes WiFi Store, and its library continually updates. There are tons of RSS apps that update. So, why can’t podcasts?

I understand why it wouldn’t be good for them to automatically download, but I would think that at least the titles could download, and the user can choose which ones to download fully.

Maybe there’s something I’m missing. Do you see any reason this can’t be done? Sound off in the comments.

iTunes app updating bug fixed? [Update]

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 11, 2008 at 05:50 PM

iTunes app updating bug fixed
Maybe it was the 2.0.1 iPhone firmware update, or more likely the iTunes 7.7.1 update, but it seems that Apple has fixed the iTunes app updating process.

Jump past the breaks to see what worked for me, and to get a status update.

How developers get you to buy apps on the App Store

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 7, 2008 at 08:39 AM

Top Paid Apps TacticsThere are a couple of ways developers can entice you to buy their apps. They can give a great description, with an ample supply of pictures on the app store. In addition, it’s always nice to see a link to a full website with a video walk through, though not as many do this. And plenty of good reviews with a high star rating help to make that purchase a little more informed. This can, and does, work for many apps, but there are other ways.

Read on to learn what they are, and to find out how you can find the best deals (or even get apps for free).

Jobs admits Apple was wrong (gasp!) [Update]

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 6, 2008 at 01:49 PM

MobileMeAccording to Ars Technica, Steve Jobs sent an e-mail to Apple employees last night admitting that MobileMe was launched too early.

“It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” said Jobs.

iPhone Firmware 2.0.1 is Live!

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 5, 2008 at 06:42 AM

iPhone Firmware 2.0.1
Apple has just unleashed the latest iPhone and iPod Touch firmware update to the interwebs. The update is said to address numerous “Bug fixes.” It’s 249MB, and that’s about as much detail as can be found right now. There are no specifics as to what bugs are being fixed, but with all the crashes iPhone users have been having with the 2.0 firmware and apps, this will be a welcomed update.

If you want to get some update action, sync your iPhone (or iPod Touch) to iTunes, hit the “Check for Update” button, then click “Download and Install.” Then, you have to agree to the terms and sit back and watch the bugs drop dead inside of your iPhone. Well, bugs don’t really die, they get fixed (hopefully). Anyway, I’m hoping this will bring an end to the unexplainable and all too frequent crashes of the 2.0 firmware.

Find out more about what it does after the break.

Some iTunes song organization tips

by Jake Gaecke on Jul 28, 2008 at 12:42 PM

iTunesToday I was browsing the web for some Apple news, and found a great article on TUAW entitled Stars and Smart Playlists. Basically, the article boils down to a quick guide on how to organize a huge library of music into a condensed playlist of great songs using ratings. It got me wanting to share how I organize my music and sync my various iPods.

In the beginning of 2008, I actually forced myself to painstakingly go through my entire library of music and rate each and every song I own. It took me quite a while, but I’m thankful I did. That said, you don’t have to rate your entire library if you don’t want to.

Get things organized after the break.
