iPod nano 4G pictured

by Indraneel Purohit on Sep 6, 2008 at 10:12 AM

iPod nano 4GAt this point, we know an Apple product isn’t official until somebody takes a crappy, rushed picture of said product. The picture above clearly shows an orange iPod nano, meeting all the requisites we’ve seen in the last week. With all the hoopla around Kevin Rose’s iPod information leaking, we’ve all been lead to believe that Apple is indeed making a new iPod nano. Now, this picture of an elongated iPod nano all but proves that September 9th will be the day Apple makes Kevin look like the leading Apple pundit.

Project your iPhone videos anywhere

by Aaron Kraus on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:28 PM

iPhone MP101 ProjectorTired of squinting to see that copy of Ghostbusters you rented on your iPhone? The iPhone has a beautiful screen, to be sure, but a 3.5” movie can be tough after a couple hours. Enter the new Honlai QingBar MP101 microprojector—a tiny projector with a built-in iPod dock. Videos play through the dock connector, and the MP101 delivers a picture up to 37” to a nearby surface, rivalling a medium-sized flat panel TV.

Jump past the break to check out the projector’s capabilities.

Kevin Rose predicts mass iPod update

by Indraneel Purohit on Aug 23, 2008 at 07:40 AM

New iPod nanoTake this with an entire shaker of salt, but Kevin Rose, founder of everybody’s favorite website, Digg, has announced his take on the September iPod updates. Rose says, in a YouTube video he created, that there will be a mass revamp of the entire iPod line. He hypothesizes that the iPod nano will go back to its roots and sport a longer, narrower form factor.

Additionally, according to his “sources,” he says the iPod touch will go under minor cosmetic changes, but more importantly sport a revision to its OS, which the iPhone will receive shortly thereafter. Kevin also says the iPods will drop in price to distance themselves from the iPhone, which starts at $199. Finally, he adds that iTunes will be updated to 8.0, which will earn the upgrade from version 7 with many new features. As expected, all of this will be announced formally within the next few weeks.

Hit the jump for a video of Kevin’s predictions.

Rare new iPod nano features discovered: failure and deformation

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:08 PM

iPod Nano first generation deformed
First generation iPod nano owners, listen up. If your iPod nano was purchased between September of 05 and December of 06, then you might have some “hot” features you don’t want.

Macworld has an article that details Apple recognition that “in very rare cases” (about 0.001 percent) said iPods could overheat. Apple is blaming the problem on an unnamed battery supplier. The faulty batteries can, in some instances, overheat, causing “failure and deformation of the iPod Nano.”

Details after the break.

X-Files branded iPods available now

by Indraneel Purohit on Aug 14, 2008 at 02:30 PM

ipodxfilesIt’s out there. Fox has made X-Files branded iPod classics and nanos, available now through their online store. While the front of the iPods remain unchanged, the back has an etched image of Mulder and Scully over the mirror finish. Beneath the image is space left for your name (or a joke name, or a song lyric, etc.) to be engraved for added personalization. The iPod classic is available for $329, a full $70 more than the regular price of a device without any engraving. The iPod nano is available for $269, also $70 more than the original price of the device.

While X-Files was an excellent show, this little gimmick is set to stir up marginal excitement for the film adaptation of the series. Honestly, the film itself is being released way too late, and so is this overblown idea of iPods that match your favorite TV show. Nonetheless, there must be some who love the show just enough to drop this much money on it, which they can as early as today.

An Apple special event in September? Again? Maybe…

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 7, 2008 at 02:00 PM

iPod Touch9to5Mac is reporting that analysts at Piper Jaffray are predicting Apple will hold a special event this September to make some new announcements. These new announcements, according to the analysts, include new iPods and Macs.

This rumor does not site any insider sources, but seems to be purely speculation. Gene Munster, one of the analysts, points out that Apple has held a special event every September for the last three years, so it’s not that hard to believe that they would do it again. What about Apple Expo 08?

Check out the rumors after the break.

Some iTunes song organization tips

by Jake Gaecke on Jul 28, 2008 at 12:42 PM

iTunesToday I was browsing the web for some Apple news, and found a great article on TUAW entitled Stars and Smart Playlists. Basically, the article boils down to a quick guide on how to organize a huge library of music into a condensed playlist of great songs using ratings. It got me wanting to share how I organize my music and sync my various iPods.

In the beginning of 2008, I actually forced myself to painstakingly go through my entire library of music and rate each and every song I own. It took me quite a while, but I’m thankful I did. That said, you don’t have to rate your entire library if you don’t want to.

Get things organized after the break.

RhapsodyReal Networks and Viacom’s Rhapsody will be launching a $50 million MP3 downloads business to challenge iTunes’ 70% market share, Reuters is reporting.

Digital music seller Rhapsody is launching a $50 million marketing assault on Apple’s iTunes, offering songs online and via partners including Yahoo Inc and Verizon Wireless, Rhapsody said on Monday.

The songs will be sold in MP3 format, which means users of the Rhapsody service will be able to play them on iPods.
