Mailplane 2.0 public beta

by Stephen Chinnadorai on May 10, 2008 at 08:03 AM

MailplaneMailplane was one developer’s answer to bridging the gap between desktop e-mail clients and Google’s highly popular webmail service: Gmail. The app looks just like a site-specific web browser for Gmail - however, it has many extra functions that a regular web browser won’t provide you. Mailplane allows you to quickly browse through the iLife Media Browser and attach a file from iPhoto or iTunes, and convert or resize images as necessary. You can also use multiple Gmail/Google Apps accounts within the single app - this is very useful for those with multiple accounts, who often find themselves having to constantly login/out from Gmail. It can also be the default app responding to “mailto:” URLs and can be launched from Address Book - rather than having Apple’s Mail.app be the default.

Version 2.0 public beta supports “Gmail 2” shortcuts and add-ons, e.g. the new Apply/Remove Label and Navigate to Level functions. Attachments can now be formed from the clipboard, which is a useful tool. Account notifications have also been improved from the previous version, now with a “do not disturb” status mode. Mailplane costs $25 and version 2.0 will be free to registered users of version 1. Mailplane requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 or newer.

Quick Fix for Gmail IMAP-Mail Issues

by Mark Rowland on Apr 13, 2008 at 09:37 AM

GmailFor those of you who use Gmail IMAP in Mail as I do, you are probably just as annoyed with one thing- the new messages counter always reads twice the actual number.  This is because the message is sent to both your inbox and the folder titled “Gmail” or “All Mail”.  Just put the following into Script Editor, and voila!

tell application “Mail”
set unreadBox to mailbox “[Gmail]/All Mail” of account “Gmail IMAP”
set unreadCount to unread count of unreadBox
if unreadCount is not 0 then
    repeat unreadCount times
set unreadMail to first message of unreadBox whose read status is false
set read status of unreadMail to true
    end repeat
  end if
end tell

by JG Mason on Jan 15, 2008 at 06:34 AM

Google Grand Prix for iPhone Google will announce an update to its popular unified homepage for the Safari browsers of iPhone/touch devices.  The current design, just six weeks old will be usurped by a new version that improves the experience.  The original brought together many of Google’s handy services like search, Gmail, RSS, and others onto one screen for simplified navigation.

The design, dubbed Grand Prix internally at Google, in it’s new version will bring more speed and customization.  Speedier Gmail means

Google to boost GMail storage

by Marvin Sum on Oct 16, 2007 at 10:20 AM

GMail seems to be one of the most popular email services available today, whether you use it on the iPhone or not. Unfortunately, a select number of users seem to be consuming a lot of storage space, especially for storing attachments like PDF documents and pictures.

In a blog post on the Official GMail Blog, Google Engineer Rob Siemborski says that “a few (users) are using Gmail so much that (they’re) running out of space, so to make good on our promise, today we’re announcing we are speeding up our counter and giving out more free storage”. GMail currently offers 2.9GB of storage, although you can increase that by paying for more. In contrast, both Hotmail and Yahoo offer 5GB and “unlimited storage”, respectively.

Mailplane 1.46: multiple accounts, menubar notifier

by Michael Yurechko on Jun 4, 2007 at 01:00 PM

For those of you out there who haven’t heard of Mailplane, don’t feel bad because not many others have either. Mailplane is a, currently unreleased, Gmail client for your desktop. Mailplane is a fully functional app that integrates with your Gmail or Google Apps email account. It allows you to read, compose, and do basically anything you could do with Gmail in your browser, but on your desktop in a standalone app.

The latest update (1.46) now allows you to access multiple Gmail accounts simply by double-clicking the name in the account drawer. This release also features a menubar notifier, similar to that of the google notifier, that allows you to easily overview new mail in your multiple accounts as well as choose the email inbox you’d like to read. Mailplane is still in private beta, but you can apply for the beta here.
