Sybase preps up software for iPhone
Sybase announced that it would be launching a new software for the iPhone that will let users access their email in a secured environment. This new program will be similar to the ones used in BlackBerry and Palm Treo handsets and will be made available to iPhone users sometime before the end of this year.
Although there are not to many details given by Sybase yet, one thing was confirmed though regarding this new program, “It will be secure enterprise grade”. And perhaps this is more than enough reason to anticipate this new program as it was what made RIM’s BlackBerry devices and Palm Treo’s popular among business mobile phone users.
Sybase has been known as a reliable business software maker not only among these two smartphone manufacturers but with other smartphones running on Symbian OS and Windows powered mobile devices. Adding the same secured mobile email program to the iPhone would certainly elevate the iPhone into the ranks of business oriented smartphones.
And so now we wait for the exact date when this made for iPhone program will be launched. Sybase says it will be soon. In the 3G iPhone perhaps?

MailTags Beta 4
I’m not a Mail.app user, simply because there’s no reason for me to have my e-mail locally - I much prefer to keep it “in the cloud” on Google’s servers. But it is up to you how you want to organize your e-mail. Obviously, if your provider only supports POP3 and no web interface, then you’re pretty much forced to use a client. Probably the best mail client for Mac is the one that ships with Mac OS X: Mail.app.
Mail is a great app, but lacks some useful features. Luckily, MailTags is an app that will bring an extra useful feature to Mail.app. It is now in Beta 4 (still a little buggy). I would consider this the ultimate Mail.app enhancement. Tags are basically a part of everything on the internet. It’s a powerful way of organizing anything - and it works well. MailTags does pretty much what the name says - it allows you to put tags on e-mails, as well as much more. It also compliments other shareware applications like iGTD, MailSteward, TagBot, EagleFiler, DEVONthink and Pagico.

Where’s the iPhone two-pane email client?
There are many products and features that get developed inside of Apple and other companies, that never get released. If Steve Jobs, or another one of the top-ranking exec decides that the feature is unnecessary, or just clutters the interface it is cut. One of those features that never saw the light of day, was the iPhone two-pane Mail view. Back at Macworld 2007, when Steve Jobs previewed the iPhone for the world, he showed a second Mail view that would allow you to preview the contents of a Mail message in the same window. After Macworld, he made a comment about not liking this view. Then surprise surprise. When June 29th comes around, the iPhone launches without this view. Was it not working? Or was it just a matter of something Steve Jobs didn’t like, and got cut out of the iPhone?
Which do you prefer: the current view or a two pane view?

.Mac gets a much needed boost
Apple has given a much needed boost to the .Mac service. Offering more storage, better integration with iLife ‘08 and even server side SPAM filtering for email.
The online storage has been increased from 1GB to 10GB for individual accounts and from 2GB to 20GB for family packs. Web Gallery will require iPhoto ‘08 and will allow you to upload and share pictures and video from either iPhoto ‘08 or iMovie ‘08. You can also let friends and family upload photos by email or browser or print out images at up to 16x20. The .Mac email now allows for attachments up to 20mb and has spam filtering available. To activate the spam filtering go to your webmail preferences in your .Mac account.
The updates and upgrades to the .Mac service will be given to the current users automatically and should take effect no later than August 14th. New users can sign up for $99.95 a year for an individual or $179.95 for a family pack with a 30-day free trial available. Overall this seems like some much needed improvements, I would say it’s still far from perfect but in my opinion it is now worth the yearly cost.

Mailplane 1.46: multiple accounts, menubar notifier
For those of you out there who haven’t heard of Mailplane, don’t feel bad because not many others have either. Mailplane is a, currently unreleased, Gmail client for your desktop. Mailplane is a fully functional app that integrates with your Gmail or Google Apps email account. It allows you to read, compose, and do basically anything you could do with Gmail in your browser, but on your desktop in a standalone app.
The latest update (1.46) now allows you to access multiple Gmail accounts simply by double-clicking the name in the account drawer. This release also features a menubar notifier, similar to that of the google notifier, that allows you to easily overview new mail in your multiple accounts as well as choose the email inbox you’d like to read. Mailplane is still in private beta, but you can apply for the beta here.
