Say good-bye to square, hello Cube.

by Greg Healy on Apr 1, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Apple CubeIn what may be one of the biggest achievements Apple may have this millennium, they have managed to fit a computer inside of a 9.8x7.7x7.7 cube. Officially dubbed the “PowerMac G4 Cube,” the Cube features a 450MHz processor based on the PowerPC G4 architecture, and a standard 64MB of RAM. It is a testament to Apple’s engineering and innovation to be able to fit a computer into such a small enclosure. I will be surprised if Apple is ever able to create a smaller computer than this. I mean really.

So far, the Cube has received many mixed reviews. Some people are absolutely in love with it, while others absolutely despise. The Cube’s form factor is quite attractive to me, though I may have to sell Apple the rights to my first born and part of my house to afford it. At a base price of $1799USD, it will cost you a pretty penny to have this piece of art.

One thing that you need to keep in mind though, is that the Cube does not come with a display. It supports resolutions up to 1900x1200. Once you buy your own display, you will be set, as it does come with an Apple Keyboard, and Mouse.

With this announcement, Apple is certainly pushing the boundaries of computer design. What are your thoughts on the new Cube?

Not again! Fifth NYC Apple Store planned for 2008

by Michael Mistretta on Dec 19, 2007 at 12:54 PM

Apple Store Cube

Sometimes I wonder what the people over at Apple are thinking. Just weeks after Apple launched their fourth Apple Store in the NYC area, reports surface that one of Apple’s 40 stores that will be launching next year, will be in the Upper North Side of NYC. Another one in NYC? They already have their flagship Fifth Avenue Store, as well as the SoHo Store, 14th Street Store and Staten Island outlets. Apple is planning to tear down, and rebuild 1981 Broadway, which is currently the location of an 8500 square-foot Victoria’s Secret. Rent in the area is about $275 - $300 a square foot, which will end up costing Apple a pretty penny. Obviously, if they are looking to open another NYC Apple Store, there must still be customers. Somewhere.

A look inside The Cube’s construction

by Greg Healy on Jul 8, 2007 at 07:14 PM

5th Ave Apple Store

In almost everything Apple does, they are known for their attention to detail, and perfectionism. This stands true looking at their products, all the way up to their retail stores. A true testament to this is the 5th Avenue Apple Retail Store (otherwise known as “the Cube”) in New York. World Of Apple has a great video on some of the work that went into building the Cube.

Apple had hired WSFilms to document the construction of the 5th Avenue Store since its inception, and the video is now available for everyone to enjoy. The video provides some great insight into just how much work was put into this project. Every little detail from the materials, location, and people was made sure to be perfect.

If you are interested in architecture, construction, or even just Apple, this video is worth your time.
