New 10.5.3 Seed, Release Just Weeks Off

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Apr 22, 2008 at 11:46 AM

10.5.3

Though most seem to be happy with Mac OS X 10.5.2, a select few, Steve Jobs apparently included, aren’t. Mac OS X 10.5.3 is on the fast track to release, as yet another developer build was seeded over the weekend.

While 10.5.2 had widely publicized bugs it was fixing, 10.5.3 has but one: WiFi issues, most recently exemplified when New York schools halted Mac shipments due to the issue. Two other issues it is known to have fixed are shutdown hangs and system mode issues. The others are anybody guess. Or anybody’s guesses, as the list of bugs fixed by this update is apparently longer than 170. This specific build, 9D22, fixes 15, and has no known issues.

Update: After this writing was finished, Apple released Build 9D23, adding 8 more fixes. Once again, no known issues.

Given the rapid succession of build releases, the consensus is that 10.5.3 will be available by mid-May. Perhaps this will give way for 10.5.4 in June?

Have you had any 10.5.2 issues? Or would you just like them to leave well enough alone? Sound off below.

Safari to receive speed boost in upcoming build

by Stephen Chinnadorai on Feb 10, 2008 at 09:46 AM

Safari Safari has received its fair share of complaints from Mac users, and now Windows users. Even though Apple claims it to be “the world’s fastest browser”, its speed could be better. That doesn’t stop me from using Safari, though. I’m not sure why, but on the Mac, I can’t get into Firefox - it just doesn’t feel right. Safari starts up much faster, and it looks and feels like a native Mac OS X app should. Safari’s compatibility has also developed; although still not as much so as Firefox, it’s a lot better than it used to be.

It’s great to hear that Safari 3.1 will be receiving a large speed boost. Seth Weintraub, a writer for Computerworld’s Apple blog, has been testing the latest beta build of WebKit – and says that performance typically peaks at 2.5 times that of Safari, even in its currently unoptimized state. This is good news for Safari users out there, and might even get some Firefox/Camino switchers back to Safari. The performance boost does sacrifice CPU usage, but only by 1 or 2 percent. Safari 3.1 will most likely be a part of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2.

OS X 10.5 Leopard Build 9A527/9A528a Released

by Zach Flauaus on Aug 26, 2007 at 07:55 PM

leopard
And conquer it will.

Everybody’s favorite next-gen operating system has just had a new build of it released to developers. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard build 9A527 (client) and 9A528 (server) has been released to the applicable developers so they can, of course, see if their software can run properly on it and what changes need to be made to make it compatible. That’s the legal side of it. Of course, the consumers are anxious to see what’s in store with just little bits of information being released every time a new build is being released, and this one is not one to balk at. Not that many new features, but more details have been released.

The final candidate is set to be released “Late August/early September,” afterwards it will be tested for 4-6 weeks before reaching the coveted “Golden Master” level. Also released include a YouTube video of the new Leopard intro (hint: space), the new Leopard default background (hint: space), and four screenshots of the OS itself (hint: not space-related). I must say that Leopard is shaping up to be a fine OS and I really want to be in line on the day it is released. I just hope it’s released at 6:00PM so I have time to get to the Apple Store after school (read: Hour and a half drive).
