More iPhone 2.0 screenshots leaked

by Greg Healy on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:23 AM

iPhone If the first little teaser of the iPhone’s upcoming app store we reported on earlier this week didn’t do anything for you, The Boy Genius Report now has extensive photos of the iPhone 2.0 update scheduled for release later this year. There are 38 photos in total which cover everything from the Calendar to Parental Controls. Many of the things featured in these photos are things that Steve Jobs, Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall went over or mentioned at the media event earlier this month.

Being Canadian, I don’t have an iPhone (yet), so I don’t have a lot to compare these new screenshots to, to see what has changed. The iPhone 2.0 developer build ships with a game called Lunar Lander, which demos the iPhone gaming features showcased at the media event. It is not known whether this is just a game to help developers get a better idea of how they can utilize the iPhones hardware, or if it will also ship with the iPhone 2.0 update released to the masses. Nevertheless, the new features and applications that are going to be introduced in the iPhone 2.0 update are sure to please both business users and personal users.

iPhone SDK delayed a couple weeks?

by Stephen Chinnadorai on Feb 23, 2008 at 06:34 PM

iPhoneThe iPhone (and iPod Touch) SDK may be delayed for 1-3 weeks according to a blog post at BusinessWeek by Arik Hesseldahl. No reasons for why this delay may happen are known or mentioned in the post.

However I’m also hearing that the situation is fluid, and a lot of last-minute decisions are close to being made about what precisely will or will not be disclosed next week, if anything. There are, apparently, a lot of moving parts to something this complex.

Hesseldahl, the writer of this blog article, contributed to a BusinessWeek report published one day before Steve Jobs made the official announcement regarding Apple’s plans to release an SDK. I don’t know whether or not to believe this rumor, even if the writer has a good track record. Apple come out with very unexpected things at the last minute. Although, I am too wondering when Apple will release this SDK. It’s now late-February, and we haven’t seen any sign of release. I’m sure Apple’s reasoning for the delay will be as good as their excuse for not including 3G in the iPhone. I’m in no rush to use the SDK myself anyway, as I’m using the 1.1.3 jailbreak, but I know a lot of people that have been holding out the jailbreak and eagerly awaiting Apple’s official alternative.

10 Best iPhone Apps

by Chris Marshall on Aug 13, 2007 at 02:14 PM

iphone

A case of creativity and ingenuity, on the basis that Apple seem intent on making it remarkably difficult for developers regards iPhone applications, this list gives you a number of ways to play games, access content or IM your friends.

Top 10:

  • Running Native Apps
  • Jive Talk
  • Glide Mobile
  • iPhoneDrive
  • Videora iPhone Converter
  • Diamenty
  • MacMost Sudoku
  • Seeqpod
  • Signal
  • Addfone

Looks interesting but to call the iPhone the ‘worlds smallest Mac’ seems somewhat premature and overstated to say the least. Respect to the developers for cracking the code required to develop native applications and for their ingenuity with what they are achieving with Web applications BUT come on Apple, let’s see the full potential of the iPhone - let these guys have a real go at developing for it!

More iPhone screen shots

iPhone Applications Screen shot

ThinkSecret, while they may not be good at predicting rumours anymore, have found a niche with providing Apple fans with screen shots. Rather than the latest Leopard build, they’ve posted up pictures of some unseen parts of the iPhone’s interface, including the Calendar and Alarm Clock apps. They also have shots of the recently revealed online RSS reader developed by Apple specifically for the phone.

The iPhone Tour Guide: What we now know

by Greg Healy on Jun 26, 2007 at 06:25 PM

iPhone Page

The iPhone launch is only days away, and many details pertaining to it are being released and leaked like wild fire. Yesterday, Apple released a Guided Tour of the iPhone on its website that gives us a great look into the interface of the iPhone, and the various applications. The tour provides an in-depth look at some features of the iPhone we already knew about, but also gives us a peek into places we have never been in the iPhone before.

iPhone Widget site

by Greg Healy on Jun 20, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Widgity.comI am sure by now you are all tired of iPhone news, but I have got a bit more for you. In the last few days, a website called Widgety has popped up, claiming the title of “The first iPhone widget list.” At the moment, the site hasn’t launched, and isn’t due to launch until—you guessed it—June 29th. The website has pages for downloading widgets and how to create your own, which is a little suspicious to me, as all iPhone applications will have to be displayed in Safari. Additionally, there is also a page for sharing your widgets, and three of the four iPhone commercials have been embedded for your enjoyment.

It seems like this might not be a “for-real” website, unless the creators know something that the rest of the world doesn’t. Come June 29th, this site may end up just listing all of the available web-applications for the iPhone, though that still doesn’t explain the download page. But—there’s always a “but"—if somehow Google Gears ends up being ported to the iPhone, then maybe offline-widgets are still feasible.

7 Kick-ass iPhone apps that don’t exist yet.

by Greg Healy on Jun 19, 2007 at 05:25 PM

iPhoneWhen Steve Jobs announced the platform that people would be developing applications for the iPhone on, it came as a disappointment to many people. Without an SDK, most software developers for the Mac will not be able to create apps for the iPhone in the traditional way. As many of you have seen, there has been much concern from the Mac Community about this. At the moment though, iPhone development doesn’t seem to be all doom-and-gloom.

In the last few days, different applications for the iPhone have been popping up like Digg and iTweetr, that make use of AJAX, HTML etc.  Mashable’s Stan Schroeder has posted what he thinks are “7 Kickass iPhone apps that don’t exist yet.”

The list basically just talks about websites that are in use now like YouTube, Gmail and Flickr. You could still use these web-services now, but like Stan says in the article, they would be much more useable if tailored to fit on the iPhone’s screen, and interface. In the comments, there were also a few good ideas tossed around, such as a Ustream app (Live streams of you and your iPhone!), and maybe even a Slingbox client for TV on your iPhone.

I think that most of these apps sound like a good idea, but most will still work on the iPhone, even if a “specialized” version isn’t created. What I would really like to see is a Cocoa app re-coded for use on the web (if at all possible). Though until Apple can work out how to best set the iPhone up for more extensive development, it looks like this is the next best thing.

Headline: Delicious RSS

by Greg Healy on Jun 12, 2007 at 03:00 PM

Lately I’ve been in the mood for things Delicious. With things such as iLikeOlives, and the WWDC Party (which the Headline developer will be attending), there is quite a bit going on in the “Delicious World” in the next few weeks. Though this teaser, not from the same people as the former events, is wetting my appetite even more. There hasn’t been much released about this app yet, but this post on the PixelMatrix blog gives us a bit more information:

I recently had the opportunity to design some slick new shirts for Doseido Software. Doseido is working on it’s first app, and they are determined to do it right! Their upcoming app, called Headline, is going to be a revolutionary delicious RSS reader. You can find out more by visiting their teaser page, and adding your email to the list. More information is on it’s way and i’m willing to bet we’ll see some more info in the next couple of weeks.

Lately I have been going from RSS reader to RSS reader, so maybe this will be the one that I can finally settle on. If you want to be notified when there is more information, enter your email address into the space provided on their website. If the Interface looks as good as the icon does and is still functional (though we won’t get into that debate here), this should end up being a great application.
