apple store still down.
Er… Macbooks
I guess by the 19th I will have decided if the 3Gs is worth the upgrade.
That’s all she wrote, kids. Very excited about new Powerbooks.
In a way, I hope so. I want this to be over.
We done here?
New ad for the iPhone.
New ad time.
Oh, and spain.
3G is $99 today.
US, Canada, France, UK, Italy.
8GB on the 3G. All available June 19th.
Get in line now.
GS drops in a week and a half. the 19th
3G drops to $99
White and black. Let’s see if Bill and I can duplicate that info, too.
299 for 32 GB
$299 32GB.
$199 16GB.
$199 for the iPhone 3GS
The obligatory environmental checklist.
I think we’re wrapping it up.
same form factor as the iPhone 3G
24 audio.
Improved battery life: 9 hours on wifi, 10 for video
Isn’t this all stuff that OS 3 has? Oh, wiat, here’s hardware encryption.
I could see a very interesting game being made with this.
Digital compass.
Compass. If only the Blair Witch kids had this.
But what if you sing along?
I’ve got this via Bluetooth in my car. Apple is playing catch up with Kia now. But you can control iPod playback the same way…and that’s awesome.
I’ll be impressed if it actually works
Voice dailing. “Eat Up Martha.”
Share with YouTube and MobileMe, but it’s looking like AT&T again won’t allow MMS.
Share videos on youtube, mobile me or MMS (when AT&T decides to support it)
Simple editing (trimming of in and out) available.
Trim the video with the “tap of a finger.”
Auto focus, auto balance, auto exposure.
30 fps VGA. made for YouTube. Will we see a one-button upload?
30FPS.
Developers can access these features via API
And…video. Happy now?
Macro-focus on something 10cm away.
Well, it couldn’t get worse.
Better low-light capability
Still…catching us up to the Pre.
uses a “tap focus”
3megapixel autofocus camera.
Jinx.
New camera.
New camera.
OpenGL support for games
This makes me hope that January will see tthe iPhone 4G for Verizon.
No design change will sure piss off the case manufacturers.
Everything is 2 to 3x faster: loading and browsing, that is.
Here we go. Glad I stayed up.
No change in the design?
iPhone 3GS: S stands for “speed.”
The same argument PC users used to make about the Mac. No apps.
Phil disses the Pre numbers. owie.
Android has 5k apps, iPhone 50k
Android: 9%. BURN
2/3 of all mobile browsing is done on an iPhone or touch.
C’mon, Phil… iPhone 4…
Phil’s back.
Developers should assign an age control to their app now and test it against the prerelease.
Bet they wanted that out today.
OS 3 comes out June 17th worldwide
June 17th release date.
Touch owners get screwed: $9.95 for the update. iPhoners get it free.
3.0 is free for all customers. $9.95 for iPod touch, but we knew that.
I survived the parade of iPhone developers ‘09.
Thank God, it’s over.
Don’t charge the corner, Steve!
What’s this? Steve Jobs is rushing the stage with a folding chair!
*twiddles thumbs*
More technical difficulties. It’s a sign. GET OFF THE STAGE!
I really need an OS 3 app taht makes this presentation go faster.
Line 6 and Planet Waves have a pretty looking app for connecting your iPhone to a guitar + amp, but again, this is late evening press release stuff. Not Apple Keynote stuff.
You can now use your iPhone as a wah-wah pedal. Well, actually, you can hook it up to an amp and a guitar and get effects.
Steve never would’ve put up with this.
Another developer?
“Can anyone with an iPhone steal your car? News at 11!”
CAN THE IPHONE CAN UNLOCK YOUR CAR… WITH YOUR CHILDREN INSIDE?
Ha. You can unlock the car using your iPhone. Wait until the local news hears about this.
This is the easiest keynote I’ve ever had to cover. Speed typing not required today.
Tap a map, it shows you were the nearest car is. Wait, isn’t this Grand Theft Auto 4?
Does anyone need a car 24/7?
Now demoing Zipcar, which is a car borrowing service for people who don’t need a car 24/7.
Okay, I guess this is going to two hours.
Do developers really want to see other developers’ work?
Five bucks says some kid gets arrested using his iPhone to play doctor
I’m going to develop a map that monitors radiation levels so it can be a prop in a 50s sci-fi movie.
demoing an app that lets users record scientific data… the iPhone is now officially a tricorder.
I feel like the judge at a science fair. Where’s the kid with the baking soda volcano app?
Are they going to let every iPhone developer show off their project?
And…more developers.
Well, there’s SOMETHING that’s available today. Star Defense. Have at it.
Boy, imagine if Apple had given this much of a damn about games in ‘84?
Running out of time for the iPhone 3G… gonna be blood if we don’t see it.
Yeah, running out of room for any sort of big announcement.
Can you tell us when we can have the damn thing?
Look, we know OS 3 is amazing. THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE.
ngmoco:) is up next. These guys are good.
Also powers iPhone, lets you play music, and boosts GPS
Yep, optional car kit to hang it off your window, and such.
Realtime GPS. I assume you’ll need to buy a subscription, rather than just an app.
Apps and accessories to complete the package.
GPS maker TomTom is up now. Interesting to see how this works against Maps.
Hey, TomTom. This’ll please the GPS masses.
By the way, I dig the new transparent blue tint of the pop-up windows. You’ll all see what I mean in the screen shots and video.
Textbooks on the iPhone. And a million college bookstores cried out in anguish.
And the Iphone declares war on the Kindle. Yo-ho!
Looks like Apple is going after the kindle, although the two really don’t compare.
Megan Fox is AOK, but the Kama Sutra is a no-no, kids!
Demoing how you can buy a magazine or book using their app.
Digital Books!? Those are the pornographic tools of Satan!
At least, according to the iPhone approvers.
Question: who’s really going to be monitoring this?
Very Star Trek. Wonder if they’ll build this into Nike+ iPod?
Streams EKG.
I’ll laugh if he talks about an app that’ll predict the date of your death.
Allows people to update their doctors with their medical info over 3G and wifi.
Sort of the the same thing they did at the OS3 announcment. Now we’re talking to a medical developer.
Which was, of course, “so baaaaad.”
Racing games go well with the iPhone, but yeah…something new, please.
Am I the only person who hates the tilt interface? Reminds me of the Nintendo Power Glove.
Hurray, a racing game. i don’t care
Don’t they always, though? At least it’s Gameloft…pretty big in the mobile gaming world.
I hate when these product announcements turn into a commercial.
Obligatory parade of developers showing off what they’ve done with iPhone 3.0.
Oh god, another video?
And now, Push notification.
Developers get access to the “heart” of Google Maps to use in their own apps.
Better integration/functionality with hardware accessory manufacturers. This is something else we knew, but hopefully we’ll see some cool products here.
Peer to peer support for finding close proximity gamers.
Hopefully, that’ll result in better games. I’m all for this.
Subsscription-based purchasing for magazines and game levels
You can erase all data remotely. That’s cool…but dangerous.
You can remotely erase your phone if you think its been stolen, then back it up if you do get it back.
If someone finds your phone, they can call you to tell you.
I subscribe to Mobile Me. I deserve that perk. Take that, everyone else!
it can even play an alert sound in silent mode so you can find it.
Log into a web browser, and you’ll see a map of where your phone is.
to use Find My iphone, you have to have MobileMe. Sneaky, apple.
That’s what my kids are for. Also, find the remote.
Find my Iphone feature!
Support for more than 30 languages in iPhone 3.0.
30 languages, now supported: all have landscape keyboard
Multilingual support: tap a button, switch languages.
Again, though, just catching us up with the competition.
Hey, we’re finally getting autofill for usernames and passwords.
Autofill in user names and passwords, contact info, etc. Nice.
HTTP streaming for video now supported.
HTTP streaming audio and video. Does that include Flash, then?
Not taht I HAVE an iPhone, but it really speaks to the state of cell phone carriers in the US
Imagine that. Good thing we have writers overseas, eh?
Sigh… no AT&T support at launch. Sucksville.
Works for Macs or PCs over bluetooth or USB
Tethering?
Buying videos works over 3G.
PC for apps, shows, and movies.
Parental controls. I’m excited about this only if it takes the idiots out of the application process.
Buy and rent iTunes videos over the air.
No MMS until Summer. Bummer. Wait, isn’t THIS summer?
Landscape now works in email, notes
Landscape in e-mail and such. Again, catching us up with the Pre.
Hopefully, this is the setup for bigger things. Otherwise, Palm Pre this weekend, you know?
To undo: shake the phone.
Copy Paste, Undo. We knew this.
More than 100 new features.
OS 3. Finally.
“Cause I was over in the next town over, and they said that the iPhone WASN’T a good platform!”
Whoot! Whoot! Whoot!
“Hey, is there anyone here who likes… SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT???”
Just to remind everyone that if you can get your app ON the iPhone, it’s great.
It’s a video for developers about developers and how much they love the iPhone.
More fast forward material in the video when you check it out later today.
I mean, we’re watching one, yeah. I’m not saying the iPhone Video was announced…yet.
Video.
video from developers, most likely NOT talking about teh secretive and draconian approval process.
40M iPhones and touches sold.
And only 4,000 of them are in some way related to farts.
50k apps on the store now.
SDK for 2.0 came out less than a year ago. Wonder if they’ve sold any apps?
EVeryone, come back from your break. This is where it gets good.
iPhone… here we go.
Wait…yeah. I took their bait. $29.
Family 5 pack for $49
Just confirmed that snow is $29
Snow Leopard’s done. Nothing really exciting there. $129 for new purchases. $29 for Leopard users.
Exchange support is included free.
Requires Exchange SErver 2007.
Drag entries from Address book into iCal to set up meetings.
iCal works with Exchange to schedule meetings. Kind of like how Entourage does it in one app.
Autodiscover should take care of teh config for you (hallelujah): just enter your name and password.
I’m not sure if this is a good thing: I like keeping my work and home accounts completely separate. Wonder if MS will kill off Entourage.
That may be useful.
Exchange support in Mail, iCal, and Address Book
Or DID he?!
Oh, pishaw, Kirk, he disappeared after his face was horribly disfigured.
Would Jobs tolerate spending this much time on this? It’s like Amelio is hiding in the rafters.
Stop talking technobabble! Show me more things I can’t afford!
Blah de blah de blah. nerd stuff now.
People will be fast forwarding through this when they make the video live later today.
Talking about multithreading, and how Multi core chips use it.
Okay, this is where we lose everyone with the spec numbers. Take a break, have a tasty beverage. Click that Digg button. Whatever floats your boat.
Memory limit: 16 billion GB or RAM. Uhm…
Translation: PowerPC users are hosed.
And now, the wonders of 64 bit software.
1 click to upload to Youtube and MobileMe.
Cool. It’ll be more useful to me now than iMovie is.
Which makes sense, considering they give iMovie away, but still: nice to see.
Oh wow. They’re going to give basic editing away for free in Quicktime now.
It’s a whole new QuickTime 10, but we new that from the shiny new icon.
Safari 4 can browser history like iTunes album covers.
$29. Nice.
concerned that Safari 4 Top Sites shows all the LOL pr0n you’ve been browsing? We have a fix!
The Missing Manual people are toasting right now. There’s a lot of new stuff to learn here.
Snow Leopard will be $29 and available in September. Hot damn.
New ways to organize your desktop, bringing Expose and the Dock and Command Tab into one feature.
Scrolling through PDFs straight from the icon looks pretty cool. And handy.
You can play a movie in its thumbnail.
Subfolders within stacks are now scrollable.
Craig Federighi up next
iTunes is taking over too much of the Mac UI.
Not sure how I feel about that.
Adopting teh video interface of iTunes.
Changing the GUI of Quicktime? Uh oh…
Eh, it’s been a while. It’s all good.
Qicktime 10: color correction, HTTP streaming
Quicktime 10. Crap. Time to buy another pro license.
Safari 4 is 50% faster, and uses 64 bit architecture
Also the number one reason I won’t give up Firefox.
Number 1 cause of crashes across all of Mac OS X is browser plugins
Hopefully they fixed the bug that screwed up CS4 installations.
Sorry, Safari 4 IS finalized.
Safari 4 will be finalized. Faster on a Mac than any other browser.
Chinese characters can now be “drawn” on the Trackpad. Lots of things being made faster (moving mail)
That’s good news for me: something I do a lot.
They’re finally fixing text selection in PDFs using preview.
Is that even possible? It’s like Mystery Hill where water flows up!
After you install Snow Leopard, you’ll get 6 GB back. Install is also faster.
I guess that means I’ll have to start using Expose.
Expose is being written into the Dock.
Seems nearly everything is being refined in Snow Leopard. I wouldn’t have thought that much needed refining.
Rewritten the basic code of the finder without changing it. Huh?
One of the improvements in Snow Leopard is Exchange support. Wait, didn’t you just say Windows wasn’t working?
I don’t think Apple needs to be kicking Microsoft when they’re done. We’re starting to look like the bad guys.
“No user should have to use disk defragmenter.” Yeah, but it takes me an hour to repair permissions…
Like wrestlers going for the face pop by mentioning the home town.
Talking smack about Vista: always good for a laugh.
Moving on to Leopard now.
On to Snow Leopard. I’m still hoping for something more on the hardware line.
13” macbook also gets a backlit keyboard, by the way
Man, this is a lot of stuff they’re throwing at us… I can’t help but wonder what the Big Announcement is.
$1,500 is now the low end for the MacBook Air, too.
Macbook air is getting updated… no surprise there.
What’s replacing the MacBook, then? A Netbook, maybe?
$1199 for the 13”
wait, wait wait… 13” Macbook is now a Macbook Pro, with nonremovable battery?
13” Mac is now a MacBook Pro at the MacBook price.
Man, the difference between a Macbook and a Pro is disappearing.
Anyone want to buy a used MacBook, then?
I wonder how many video camera owners complained to get that.
And there it is! FireWire 800 is back in the MacBook!
Macbooks get FW800
But what about FireWire?
This is interesting: Macbooks are getting an SD slot!
17” keeps the Express Card Slot for high-end audio
Both are shipping today
17” gets upgraded, too
Low end will run you $1.7k
$1,700. Wow!
Max 8 gigs of ram, 500 gig hard disk
3.06 GHZ Dual Core.
5 year life = 1000 recycles
Express card slot ditched in favor of SD card slot.
IMproved display: 60% better color
Equivalent promise = “No, baby, I promise I’ll never do anything to hurt you.”
Well…not be mortal man, anyway. They promise it’ll last 5 years.
Predicting five years of life… ON ONE CHARGE! Or not.
Lithium Polymer Battery in new MacBook Pro 15”. Can’t be removed.
Non-removable battery, 7 hours battery life.
New Macbook Pro 15”?
That was quick.
No surprise there; having a Mac hardly counts if people can’t SEE you own a Mac…
Focus on the MacBook line at the moment.
Macbooks are now the most popular Mac.
Bertrand Serlet, Scott Forstall up next
OS X users now up to 75 million (including iPhone)
Are they going to Open Source OS 9? Please please please
I’m pleased to see us start with OS X.
Growth has exploded in the last two years.
25 million OS X users
Many developers from many countries. Yeah, yeah. How about that netbook.
Over 5,000 attendees from more than 50 countries
“I’m a Mac” sure had some good Apple product placement in his horror movie, by the way.
Phil!
Always good to see Hodgman picking up a check.
New commercial.
And we’re off
I believe RATT is his 80s hair metal band of choice.
I keep hoping Phil will come out to “The Final Countdown.”
Counting down the final seconds.
“Silence your things, so you can hear our things.” Much like church…or a movie theater.
Opacity has always been an issue with you, Bill.
Sorry, I’ll increase my opacity
Quick request of our readers before we get going. If you’re enjoying the blog, do us a favor and give us a DIGG on the button up there on your left. It’ll make my boss so very happy.
Oh. Bill. I didn’t see you there.
Okay, let’s do this.
Apple keynote music selection question; does Apple select bands because they’re trendy, or does being played during an Apple keynote make you trendy? Discuss.
My promise to our readers…if my allergies act up during the blog, I won’t let it affect our posts. That’s because I care.
The press is now inside the hall.
Right now, this kind of all serves as a painful reminder that we won’t be experiencing this type of excitement at next year’s Macworld Expo.
I’m amused by the number of companies sending out press releases today. Do they think anything other than the keynote is going to get coverage?
Apple store is down…and my credit card is out.
If you’re here early and looking for something to do, let me suggest our iPhone rumor roundup.
Of all the rumors and speculation going on, I’ll be thrilled if we just get a new iPhone, available today. My first gen phone could use a replacement this afternoon.
Phil Schiller may still be sleeping, but I’m up, eagerly anticipating today’s announcements. Kind of wish I could do this directly from an Apple Store, so I could just turn around and buy whatever’s announced.
Our new podcast: Meet...

on June 8, 2009 at 09:27 AM - LINKCan’t wait to see what the Apple gang brings us. Of course I’m hoping the new iPhone hardware announcement is in the mix as well as an update and an actual release date for Snow Leopard but I’ll take pretty much anything they can throw at us. Not sure about the Macbook/Macbook Pro announcements but it would be sweet. I’ve read recently that a couple folks believe there could be a new and secret product announcement, I’m not holding my breath on that one but if it does happen it will feel like Christmas morning when I was 8. Even before the keynote begins, here’s to Apple and today’s event! Hip Hip Hooray! If I were to win a Just Mobile Xtand for iPhone on top of all that Apple will bring to us today? I don’t know what I would do! Talk about the proverbial “cherry on top”!
on June 8, 2009 at 10:07 AM - LINKTo be honest, I’m hoping for the new iPhone hardware is part of today’s announcement because I’m quite sick of the PalmPre people already (even with their new cool gadgets).
I’m also psyched about a release date for Snow Leopard.
Please .... please.
