WWDC 2008- Our best so far. “Go make some great products” says Steve.
Rounds of applause for Scott and the iPhone team.
The iPhone commercial mocks the “iPhone killer” commercials, stating that the new iPhone will kill the old iPhone.
The iPhone 3G will be available on July 11th, and they have a new commercial to make sure everyone knows.
Price. The iPhone started at $599 for an 8GB, then for $399. Now, a ridiculous $299 for the 16GB model, $199 for the 8GB.
All details with carriers are “signed, sealed and delivered.” The 70 country number will happen this year.
70 countries over the next several months.
The iPhone 3G had goals of hitting 12 countries today, and 25 within the next three months. How did they do? Well, let’s just say “It’s a small world after all.”
GPS is added in addition to the other location method of cell towers from before.
iPhone 3G battery stand by time is 300 hours
2G talk time 10 hours
3G talk time 5 hours.
Browsing 5-6 hours
Video 7 hours
Audio 24 hours.
Compared to other phones, very, very, good.
3G is “amazingly zippy,” per Steve. The iPhone is 36% faster than other phones is comparable 3G technology for browsing the web. With e-mail the 3G downloaded mail photos in 5 second, while EDGE took 18 seconds.
More on 3G. 3G = faster data downloads with the browser and e-mail downloads. The demo website loaded in 21 seconds on the 3G, and 69 seconds on EDGE.
iPhone 3G is beautiful. Thinner at the edges. Full plastic back. Solid metal buttons. The same gorgeuous 3.5 inch display. Camera, and hey! A flush headphone jack! Improved audio. It feels better in your hand.
Today they introduce...applause, apparently. Couldn’t hear!
What are the next challenges? 3G network, first of all. Enterprise support is second. Third party app support is third. Fourth, iPhone in more countries...Steve acknowledges there are jailbreaked iPhones in use. Lastly, everyone wants an iPhone. So...the iPhone will be more affordable.
90% customer satisfaction with the iPhone. Count me as part of that. 98% of iPhone users are browsing the web with their phone. 94% on e-mail, 90% are text messaging, and 80% are using ten or more features. Six million iphones sold so far.
Here comes the iPhone info!
MobileMe replaces .mac. Users are automatically upgraded to MobileMe, which will run $99 a year with 20GB of storage.
Me.com, a Web 2.0 application, offers direct access to all of the MobileMe information that can be shared with family and friends. Any MobileMe pictures and such can be shared quickly and easily so anyone can log in to see it no matter how they’re connected. You can use Me.com like a desktop app, including drag and drop. “Not what you’d expect from a web application,” says Schiller.
MobileMe. Phil Schiller explains Mobile Me. Everyone can get push e-mail, contacts and calendars without Exchange Servers. You can get to it using your Mac, PC or iPhone, pushing the info up and down on the fly to keep things synced. We agree here that it’s a terrible name, but an amazing application. EVerything is up to date no matter where you are. Works with iCal, the Address Book, etc., and works for PC users.
Ad Hoc- Users can use any way to transport their iPhone apps to up to 100 other iPhones.
Available in 62 countries. Apps less then 10 gigs can be gotten from Wifi, iTunes, or mobile network, 10 gigs + can be gotten from iTunes or Wifi.
Enterprises would like more than just the App Store for their company phones only. Apple provided. Applications can be created to run only on phones within a company to be distributed on their own intranet. Downloaded via computer, and synced via iTunes. This is great for Apple, as it’ll certainly increase popularity of both the iPhone and iTunes in large companies where Apple needs to continue gaining ground.
Developers keep 70% of revenue, FairPlay wrapped, no charge to post free apps
Now detailing the App Store.
iPhone 2.0 will be available in July, and is a free update for all current iPhone users.
Now he is thanking all the developers. Talking about the biggest gripe: Background processes. Goes out of his way to poke fun at the Windows Task Manager. Push update system from server to iPhone. Shipping in September, seeding soon.
New parental controls allow adults to restrict access to various items, including YouTube.
Users and now search for contacts in the iPhone. Support of the iApps, too, including Keynote and such. Word, Excel and Powerpoint are now viewable on the iPhone, as well. They’ve added Alt, Delete and Move to the keyboard, and the ability to save images from an e-mail to the photo library. There have been request for a scientific calculator, so that’s been added as well.
New Fantasy 3D game From Digital Legends. Uses OpenGL and touch screen controls. Shipping in September.
Round of applause for all developers, who all seemed thrilled that the iPhone 2.0 SDK article is so easy to use.
MIMVista medical imaging application offers mobile solutions impossible before the iPhone. This will offer 3D reconstructions and such that can be shared iPhone to iPhone. Complex desktop app now in the hands of physicians and patients, available at launch of the iStore.
Modality- Learning tool, targeted at Medical Students. Used to replace Flash cards. No word on price.
No word on a price for Band
Band for iPhone- Make music using your iPhone. Piano, drums, guitar, bass, etc.
MLB.com. At Bat offers all games. Details of each game as it happens, and it updates constantly. iPhone’s media player adds real time highlights of every game. Highlights come right after the play, not the game. Only on the iPhone. No word on price, but in the App store.
Brian Greenstone of Pangea brings Enigmo to the iPhone. 50 levels will make it to the iPhone. Brian says it’s better than the original. Also, Cro-Mag Rally will be coming over. 11 cars from which to choose. Three days to get the iphone versions up and running for the iPhone. The iPhone is the steering will. Turn the iPhone left, and the car turns left. “The SDK to do all this is fantastic!” Adding accelerometer steering took about ten mintues. $9.99 each.
Mobile News for iPhone- By the Associated Press. Native on the iPhone. Read all the news you want, right on you iPhone. Free on the iPhone
Loopt for iPhone- Find you friends in the area, see what they’re doing, invite them for lunch. Free on the iPhone
TypePad mobile blogging app brings photo blogging on the iPhone. Can send photos directly to the blog, or allows you to add photos from photo album at any point. Can send to different blogs, and can work on a different entry while the previous is being published. Then links directly to the blog via Safari on the iPhone. Free at launch of App Store.
Ebay on the iPhone. Native application. Watch items while bidding. Enter and confirm bid, and it’s instantly placed in the system. Can also monitor watch list.
Now they’re demoing some apps...Monkeyball!! Apps at the app store for $9.99, affirming the superiority of the iPhone’s Accelerometers.
Plenty of talk I don’t pretend to understand, but I did just hear 3D graphics and CocoaTouch APIs. Xcode will be used to write, bug and execute code. iPhone simulator will allow developers to run and debug their apps right on the Mac. Scott Forstall, head of iPhone software gives a demo of the SDK. Focuses on CocoaTouch.
SDK. “Really exciting stuff,” says Steve. They’re opening up the same API and tools that Apple uses internally for their iPhone development.
And, the crowd loves the video on the iPhone 2.0
Sorry for the drop. We’re back, so hopefully you stuck with us. You haven’t missed much...just a video of various enterprises.
Turn off cell phones, here comes Steve.
Turn off cell phones, here comes Steve.
Where is Steve?
iMacs on the Stage
Al Gore is in the crowd.
I sure am
Is anyone else excited about iPhone Software 2.0?
Delayed, or is he just building suspense?
Keep in mind that Steve is usually about 5-10 minutes delayed.
10 minutes to go.
Time to break out the Keynote Bingo
The mad rush for seats begins.
About 20 minutes out now, assuming it starts on time. I’ve heard reports of a lot of servers going down under the weight of traffic, so stick with us if you’re having trouble elsewhere. We’ll be here throughout.
45 minutes and counting. What’s everyone looking forward to seeing?
Welcome, everyone, to our live coverage of the WWDC Keynote. We’ll get going soon, so sit back, relax, and get ready for the show.
