Will you wait in line for the iPhone 3G?

by Josh Holat on Jun 27, 2008 at 10:03 AM

3G iPhone Ad
The first gen iPhone had a ton of hype before its release. So much so, that no matter who you are, you most likely had heard of it (even if you were living under a rock). The first gen iPhone didn’t have 3G, GPS, or even a software development kit (SDK) when it came out, yet thousands of people still waited in line for it for days. Why? Simply because it was something new, and it looked awesome. Well, now the second generation is here, and it does have 3G, GPS, and a killer SDK, as well as maybe even more hype than the first gen. This leaves me with one question; are you going to wait in line on July 11th for the iPhone 3G?

If you do plan on waiting in line, do you own a first gen iPhone? If not, has the second gen finally convinced you to switch carriers and go with the iPhone? It’s a hard decision because the $199 price makes it look great, but the expensive data plan may be a turn off for many. Either way, I still think a first gen iPhone will be fine for those who don’t live in an area where 3G is available and don’t care about GPS. Since the iPhone is about 90% software, first gen iPhones will still get the SDK, and therefore they will still get all the killer apps the iPhone 3G will be able to get.

It’s decision time, let it fly in the comments.

I’ll be upgrading, but not right away. I wouldn’t bother, but at $200, my wife has decided she wants one. So, she gets the old phone, I get the new one. Just don’t tell her I said that until after I get the 3G and have it set up with my number.

I also plan on upgrading, the only thing stopping me is the higher data plan.  Also, I don’t live in a major city, so I most likely won’t get 3G speeds anyways.  But I have Wi-Fi in both of my houses, so 3G isn’t necessary.

I will be upgrading from current iPhone.

You think there will be a line??  I was hoping to just walk right in, leave my $200 and leave with super speedy new iPhone.

  • I won’t have to wait in line.  My current Verizon contract expires next year.  So until then ...

Does anyone know if there is going to be a ‘plentiful’ supply of these things at the stores? I guess what I am asking is if I walk into a an Apple Store or AT&T;on Saturday 7/12, am I going to have a hard time getting the 3G??

I have been waiting since June 2nd because that is the day I lost my iPhone!  And I can’t get a replacement until the new ones come out on the 11th!  I had to go buy a $14.95 phone to tide me over.

You gotta love the ebay spammer above who linked back to this article instead of to his ebay auction.
