Will the iPhone be the downfall of Palm and RIM?

by Mark Rowland on Apr 13, 2008 at 09:10 AM

Will the iPhone's ease of use and intuitive UI end Palm and RIM? According to market analysts, the iPhone has ruined Palm’s smartphone bid and Research in Motion’s Blackberry is next to go.  An analyst for Needham & Co. reports that Palm has the hardest battle against the iPhone, pushing up hardest against their outdated OS and awkward UI.  Palm has seen decreasing user-ship even before the iPhone was released; the iPhone has only seemed to speed up their demise.  Although the numbers for RIM and their blackberry haven’t fallen too sharply yet, they are predicted to continue to slowly decline, perhaps picking up speed with the imminent release of the 3G iPhone.  The same firm predicts that the highly anticipated 3G iPhone will be the nail in the coffin for both companies.  Although the success, or possible lack there of, of Google’s Android Mobile OS may help sway the market in favor of Palm and RIM, it is unlikely.  Both Palm and RIM have been dug in too deep by the iPhone to see a sizable comeback in the near future.

Why is everyone jocking the Iphone.  First off it was supposed to be hack free, which was what they prided themselves on. Wrong. The iphone is media rich and a toy, a fragile one at that. I have a blackberry curve and it suits all my needs.  If I want a music player, I will buy a good sound system, not a phone. If I want to surf the internet, then I’ll use my laptop or any of the thousands of computers at work using a high speed DSL or Cable line.  If I want to watch a movie, I prefer to do so on my HDTV not on a phone screen. It’s a toy.  A lot of people I know have one and they only use it for killing time at work and they all have this dumb look on their face as they stare at it trying to figure out why they spent so much on it. No one will say that it sucks after they spent hundreds on it. Most people that rave about it probably have never owned a high end phone before.  Also,  ATT is still the service you get, so thats the quality of connection you will get. How can it cause the end for RIM if it uses the Edge network just like the RIM. 3G is the network that should have been implemented into it but I guess playing music was more of a priority. There is nothing revolutionary about it. I have tinkered with it before and it didn’t put me in a state of awe. Apple intentionally didn’t allow the expansion for more memory so the sales for Ipods wouldn’t go down. Imagine having 40 Gigs on your phone.  Why have an Ipod. Apple wasn’t stupid for doing that, but people are stupid for paying the 4-6 hundred dollars for a phone.  It’s a media phone geared at people that use the word “neato” not for business needs. O ya, don’t drop it cuz there’s no deals with it either.  Usually a company gives a guarantee to show confidence their product. Most sales people won’t even recommend it as a first choice. One last thing to ask yourself. When you are at home, are you really going to use it as a stereo or surf the net. You will still buy an Ipod so you are not saving anything buy getting this phone. The wireless is good, but if you are on the constant go, finding a hotspot can be a chore at times.
