Why the double monitor port Mac mini is likely

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Feb 24, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Mac mini

Regardless of whether the Mac mini that has been popping up in pictures and video is the real deal “2009 Edition” or not (my bet: not), a key point many are making to prove it is fake actually makes sense: the two video out ports, one DisplayPort and one mini-DVI.

The mini is intended as a switcher’s machine. Just ditch your PC tower and hook the Mac mini up to all your existing peripherals, and you’re a Mac user. How much sense would it make, then, to make the only display connector available be Mini DisplayPort, a connection which is not yet part of a greater standard that in and of itself hasn’t received widespread adoption. The number of PC switchers who currently have a monitor with a DisplayPort connector is pretty darn close to zero as it is, and the number with a Mini DisplayPort display likely is zero. By having mini DVI as a port option, it eliminates this issue. (Apple may also go about this by including a free Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, a slightly more economical choice.)

What do you think? Is the Mac mini going to hit shelves with two mismatched monitor ports and five USB ports? Or will we see a brand new design? Sound off in the comments below.

Personally i think this 2009 edition looks real. I think apple is not going to change the mac mini design any time soon. Remember its a budget system and they don’t want to eat into the imac segment. I would have liked the black on aluminum look i.e. Black plastic top with aluminum surround casing. But that wont happen till they change the USB keyboard and make the keys black. So all in all I think this thing is real and coming out on the 7th March. The base model would be a core 2 with 2.0 Ghz cpu, 2GB DDR 2 mem, 120GB harddrive, and 256MB Nvidia graphics chip. Cant wait to play some decent games on the Mac Mini.

@Javier - I think Apple will change the design of the Mac Mini this time around. It’s been so long since the previous update, it would be a silly idea to keep the aesthetics the same for another 18 months, when it will look really out of date. I feel they will at least update it to use the same material’s and manufacturing idea’s as the MacBook range. I guess we’ll find out for sure next month!

@Ed Parry It would be all the better if that would be the case with the new design. I feel that more people at least from what i have noticed on twitter are waiting for a mac mini update rather than the iMac. I know that i would be waiting in line cash in hand when the new mini comes out. Just have to wait it out but i am sure the wait will be worth it in the end.

Why not just have two mini DisplayPorts.  Apple makes a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter.  That way people can still hook up old monitors.  I don’t see the point in mismatching the miniDVI and the mini DisplayPort.  Both ports will require an adapter to hook up a monitor.

I’m thinking Apple is going to redesign the whole case, probably all brushed aluminum.  It’s just been too long since the last time that they updated the Mini that it needs some extra attention.  I also disagree with the dual monitor ports idea.  Having mini DVI only helps a handful of people, almost of which I believe are previous Mac owners.  You have to have an adapter either way.  And Apple has never cared before if you had to “adapt” yourself to a new product.  No separate mouse buttons on the new MacBooks, no firewire for MacBooks…. Apple doesn’t really care.

Apple needs to dump the GMA 950 video soon. Get the nVidia 9400M from the Macbook in there and more people will make the switch. Since video is not upgradable, they need to get the most powerful chipset they can in there, and one that doesn’t leech system memory. Until then, the Mac mini will be looked on as nothing more than a toy by PC users.
