Where have all the 8GB iPhones gone?

by Jake Gaecke on Sep 22, 2008 at 09:17 AM

iPhone 3G 32GB rumorInventory numbers on the 8GB iPhones are extremely low according to retail sources (via AppleInsider). Now what do you think could be causing this shortage?

Apple often tries to clear out their inventories before launching new products, or upgrades. So, why would Apple let the 8GB model run dry when they only have 8GB and 16GB models to choose from? Either there’s really just a shortage of this model, or Apple is likely prepping for a larger capacity iPhone.

AppleInsider says that Apple is poised to release a 32GB model of the iPhone 3G to match the larger capacity of its iPod touch brother. The larger capacity would be a welcome improvement for many potential buyers. The iPhone is a convergence device, of sorts, where music, videos, pictures, applications, and the internet come together. So, if it’s the only device you carry with you, more space is always a good thing.

While I think it’s very likely that Apple will release a 32GB model iPhone, I don’t think they will be phasing out the 8GB; its low price point is too tempting for many buyers on a budget. Apple wants to have as many iPhone users as possible, so to eliminate this cheaper model might hurt them more than it would help. AppleInsider also points out that the shortage could because of iPhones now being sold at Best Buy, or just a larger than anticipated demand for the 8GB.

So, who’s getting rid of their current iPhone for a 32GB if Apple releases the larger capacity model?
