What to expect in upcoming iPhone firmware 2.2

As soon as one firmware update is released by Apple, the first thing to do is start waiting for the next one. iPhone 2.1 is great, but no matter what, we’ll always want more. In fact, I can think of one specific feature that’s driving a lot of people crazy…Copy and Paste! Sadly, it’s not on the list, but did you really think it would be? It’s such a simple feature, but you know it’s going to be huge when it finally makes it’s way on to the iPhone. While we’re waiting for that, at least we’ll be treated to some new features in the not too distant future.
The list comes courtesy of Wired, and here it is.
- Google Street View - Apparently this comes with walking directions in addition to your standard driving directions. No compass, though; you’ll have to buy the Google phone for that feature. Anyone jumping boat for a compass?
- Direct Podcast Downloads - You don’t need to sync anymore. Sweet feature, for some.
- Rate an app after deletion - Something tells me that rating an app after you delete it is not the best idea. There’s only two reason I delete an app from my iPhone; I either hate it, or never use it, and neither of those things is going to end with a good rating.
- Line In support - For audio in through the dock connector, not that a third party app could use it anyway.
- Emoji emoticons - Finally! I can send a picture of an airplane without actually taking a picture of an airplane. Plus, I can do it with SMS!!!! Who needs MMS when you have Emoji!?
- Share location - I’m sure there are a few app developers that are a little mad about this one. There are quite a few apps that help you share your location, and soon you’ll be able to do it from Maps
- Safari tweaks - A search box right next to the address bar, and the reload button moves right, inside the address bar. Not really that different.
Copy and Paste- Haha, ha… Sorry.
As with all firmware updates, I can’t wait for this one to go live. Now I know that everyone wants copy and paste, but what other features do you want Apple to add to the iPhone?

How about letting us change text message sounds? Or MMS?
on October 31, 2008 at 11:52 AM - LINKHaving voice dialing would be great, especially since it is nearly impossible to dial on iPhone’s virtual keyboard while driving and not actually endanger myself and the other people around me.
on October 31, 2008 at 06:20 PM - LINKBluetooth synching too. It is ridiculous to have to plug in to itunes every time I need to synch my calendar and contacts.
And for that matter, why not allow us to beam contacts via bluetooth? If that is too much to ask, then why can’t there be a way to send the contact from the address book via text messaging?
Apple and AT&T;have got to fix the terrible user experience with MMS on the iPhone. Some big improvements could be achieved without even updating the iPhone software. I make the case here: http://blog.mcmanus-family.com/2008/09/the-case-for-mms-on-the-iphone.html
on November 1, 2008 at 12:20 AM - LINKI would like to see Apple add radio bluetooth to the iphone to send and receive ringtones from phone to phone. Also the telenav turn-by-turn voice on the gps maps applications.
on November 1, 2008 at 04:11 PM - LINKI hope the share location actually works now. The first day I got my iPhone 3G my girlfriend were both testing Loopt and it kept showing that we were in Texas on our GPS when we are on the west coast.. ridiculous.
It’d be fun to be able to track each other so I can sneak up on her and go BOO! ;-)

on November 5, 2008 at 11:51 PM - LINKGreat idea! I wish I was able to change the sound of text messages… I’m more than over annoyed with not knowing who’s phone is receiving a text and causing my gf and I both to dig for our phones.
