WALL*E movie opens, Apple references abound
The much anticipated animated movie from PIXAR, WALL*E, arrived at movie theaters today. I wanted to read the reactions that early viewers had of the movie, so I checked a few websites. What I found was fascinating. Naturally, the movie received rave reviews; that wasn’t the surprising part. What’s interesting is the fact that there are Apple references scattered throughout the movie.
For example, when WALL*E boots up, he makes the Mac startup chime once he reaches 100%. EVE (who resembles the older iPod) is the object of WALL*E’s desire. When we get a close look at EVE, it appears as though she doesn’t have any seams on her sleek white. According to moviegoers, there is one scene where WALL*E is searching for her arms while they are in the locked position. He attempts to find the gaps, and if you’ve ever tried to open an iPhone or iPod, you no doubt will pick up how daunting this task can be.
Looking for more references? WALL*E likes to unwind by watching old VHS tapes of the Barbara Streisand movie, Hello Dolly. The tape plays through a circa 2006 video iPod that WALL*E magnifies with a large lens onto a projection screen.
I am excited about playing the WALL*E game on my 17” MacBook Pro, and I’ll be taking my daughter to see WALL*E this weekend. I know we’ll enjoy the movie, and I’ll love seeing the Apple references.
If have already seen, WALL*E did you pick up on the Apple references? Did you notice others? Let us know in the comment section.

The startup “dong” was the first thing I picked up on. I noticed the iPod as well. Very cool.

I always get a kick out of Apple references in movies. Although not a huge fan of Sex & The City I thought it was cool that Carrie, and other cast members used Macs, along with other products, in the series.
I’ll definitely purchase WALL*E when it is available in iTunes.

on June 29, 2008 at 09:23 AM - LINKi also noticed that some of the robots that could speak, like the auto-pilot, had voices VERY similar to the voices that are on macs, just look at the “Speech” section of system prefs

At the very end of the credits, it said something like “Thanks to Apple for the speech.” So the voices ARE from Macs. :D
