Vudu cuts set-top box price

by Stephen Chinnadorai on Jan 25, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Vudu Vudu is one of Apple TV’s main rivals - one that made it on to Steve’s slide of those who “failed” to get movie rentals right. Vudu has just cut the price of their basic version by over $100 - bringing it to $295. The price cut has commenced today, but anyone who bought the box in the last 30 days is entitled to a $100 movie credit. Surely, this is a reaction to the Apple TV take 2. Although, even with this price cut, the Vudu basic version is still more expensive than the Apple TV. Apple TV prices start at $229 for the 40GB version.

In a similar manner to the Apple TV; Vudus allow the user to rent or buy movies in both standard definition and high definition via the internet. The prices vary from $2 to $20 for purchases, and $1 to $4 for rentals. These prices are similar to Apple TV, but actually a little cheaper. For new releases to be rented, Apple charges between $3 and $5. Vudu’s main advantages over Apple TV are that it can play 1080p at 24fps and can receive new movies before the Apple TV does, because there is no 30 day delay.
