Verizon possibly already testing the iPhone 4G on its 4G LTE network
Verizon Wireless has already announced they are expecting to see Apple’s iPhone on their 4G network next year. Now, the rumor is that Verizon and Apple are already working together in testing the new iPhone (probably a prototype) on Verizon’s 4G Long Term Evolution network.
MacTouchUser links to a report on Fone Frenzy that states Verizon Wireless’ CEO, Lowell McAdam, has made several visits to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, and that Apple is indeed testing a CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. MacTouchUser also speculates that Verizon and Apple are working together to test the rumored Apple Tablet, although the reliability of that claim is questionable.
If these rumors turn out to be true, that is very good news for consumers; it means competition, and corporate competition is almost always a good thing. Verizon is also said to have the best network in the United States, and the iPhone is also considered by many to be the best smartphone available to date. Verizon Wireless will be the first carrier in the United States to roll out LTE-based 4G network, which promises to be 10 times faster than current 3G services and to include low latency, enhanced security, world-wide roaming, and more, beginning in 2010.

Really? Square all this silliness about a ‘Verizon iPhone’ with the real world announcement by Verizon of the Android OS-based Droid from Motorola.
And, please: there will not be a CMDA iPhone made for a US carrier. An iPhone may well eventually be released with LTE capabilities, for use on the 4th generation Long-Term Evolution networks being fielded and tested by both Verizon Wireless and at&t. Note that Sprint/Nextel have instead opted, at least in the near term, for a 4th generation network platform based on WiMAX technology.
LTE will support carrier transmissions from LTE equipped network segment to CMDA network segments, but there is no sense in designing an iPhone to use the slower 3G extended CDMA network Verizon has deployed. Instead, it would make sense to build an iPhone with a 4G radio. Though the capabilities offered by such a device are clearly not consistent with the culture Verizon, and it’s traditional revenue streams.
LTE will also support transmission to GSM-based segments, so a carrier like at&t will be able to support existing iPhone users on their extended HSDPA 3G network segments, which will themselves interconnect to LTE segments. But, there will be no end-to-end 4G connections for uses of existing iPhones. End-to-end must wait for the deployement of 4G handsets, which Apple has not announced.
Android based models are not iPhones, but the Android OS is a competent, powerful and growing platform. T-Mobile users, for example, love their second generation Android OS MyTouch handsets. And, Verizon users will doubtless be enthralled by the Droid.
Can we just forget about a CDMA iPhone deployment by Verizon? Please?

This is just more fantasizing about getting an iPhone on Verizon in the face of the 5 year contract still not expiring soon (2007+5=2012), Verizon demanding phones use their app store, and the new Droid ad campaign against the iPhone.
on October 19, 2009 at 11:18 PM - LINKAs an advertising manager in the technology field, I can tell you there is one thing you don’t do. You don’t spend millions of dollars on slamming a company that you are working with behind closed doors. Verizon is spending millions of dollars on their Droid campaign – factor in media buys/TV commercials during NFL and MBL games and you quickly reach multi-millions of dollars. They are pitting Verizon against Apple because they know that Apple is the brand they need to beat…not AT&T…who’s brand has already taken a beating. The Google/Verizon alliance and the fact that Verizon has stated “none of their phones will come with app portals other than Verizon App Store pre loaded on the phone” should put these ridiculous rumors to rest once and for all. Users can side load those other app stores – WinMo, Android, & eventually Palm – but most non-technical people will not or will not even have knowledge they exist. They will simply use Verizon App Store as their purchase point. Apple would never agree to take their App Store off the iPhone. The App Store is the reason the iPhone was made!! It is a delivery device for the App Store!
