Update: TomTom does have an iPhone navigation prototype

by Josh Holat on Jun 13, 2008 at 06:00 PM

TomTomRemember Thursday when sources close to the TomTom navigation company said they had no prototypes of an iPhone navigation application, nor did they even have plans to make one? Well, it seems as if TomTom has changed their mind. A French representative named Yann Lafargue has come forward and said that TomTom does, in fact, have a prototype.  “Since the SDK became available, some of our engineers tried to put Navigator on the iPhone. And the first tests showed that it worked well, for the most part,” he said.

He also went on to add he doesn’t believe Apple will be blocking third party navigation apps, as previously thought. However, he is still worried about whether Apple will allow them to sell through the App Store. Lafargue believes, “Now, it’s a matter of seeing in which manner we can launch it. We couldn’t, for example, finalize a product only to be blocked from the App Store because Apple decided to make its own program, or to favor one from its partners.” One thing, though, is for sure; no matter what happens, there will be at least one turn by turn navigation app for the iPhone. Whether it’s from TomTom remains to be seen.
