Up close and personal with the $853 iPhone 3G from Globe Telecoms

Globe Telecoms iPhone 3G
After announcing its price range for the iPhone 3G a couple of weeks ago at around $1000 for the prepaid units, Globe Telecoms decided to bring down the price tag to around $853 (8GB model) a few days before the August 22 launch of the iPhone 3G in the Philippines. The iPhone 3G was launched on August 22 amidst Filipino spectators and Apple fans who waited jubilantly till the stroke of midnight before they could finally lay their hands on the iPhone 3G. Reports had it that Globe Telecoms was available to activate 600 iPhone 3G units in a couple of hours.

The following day, after reading various reports, I trooped to the nearest Globe Telecoms distribution center to check out the iPhone 3G. There were not too many people queuing up when I got to the nearest Globe Telecoms Hub, but there on one of their demo tables was a shiny new iPhone 3G. Just when I was entering the store, I felt such a rush of excitement that I even ignored a store employee asking me something as if trying to stop me from entering their shop. But no, not even security personnel can stop me from reaching out to my first encounter with an iPhone 3G unit. I’ve waited too long for the moment when I could finally touch the iPhone.

It was well worth it. Just the mere touch of the shiny black iPhone 3G was enough to satify my hunger, my longing. I had to get out of the store, and get out with the iPhone 3G on my hand. In short, I forgot about the high price, I forgot that I had reserved it a couple of days ago with some Globe Customer Representative through their Globe Loyalty Program for Php22,000 with a two-year lock-in period for my existing post-paid subscription, which I learned will not come into fruition for another week more. There’s no way I can last another week.

To make the long story short, I purchased an 8GB iPhone 3G for around $853 and I got an extra pre-paid sim card.

And now, after a few days of tinkering with my new iPhone 3G—installing apps, modifying the settings, testing the call and texting features, buying a leather case, transferring my music files, transferring contacts, browsing Appletell using the iPhone 3G’s Safari browser, updating my Facebook status, posting to my personal blog using the WordPress apps, trying to land the Apache Lander softly but to no avail, fingertapping through Tap Tap Revenge...and the list goes on and on—I am more than happy to have finally owned the iPhone 3G.

Am I satisfied with my purchase despite the price? Most definitely.
