Owners of the new unibody aluminum MacBooks are reporting that after third-party RAM Upgrades, their machines are becoming quite unstable and locking up.
There are a number of discussion threads on Apple’s support forums where users have complained about such issues dating back to mid-October.
It appears that if the MacBook is updated with Apple’s own RAM, supplied by Samsung, the issues do not occur, while if updated with RAM from popular suppliers such as OWC or Crucial, the Macs become unstable. The only reported fix for this issue; reinstall the original Apple supplied RAM.
It is generally recommended by Apple that users use Apple RAM for their upgrades, which generally is quite a bit more expensive. In the past, I have even gone with third-party supplied RAM due to the lower cost, but these reports would make me a little hesitant to go that route.
