Is your Mac running slow, and you don’t know why? Well here are some tips and programs to help you get the most out of your Mac.

1)  You may not know that having large image files - such as ones from your digital camera — and using them as a background wallpaper may make your computer slower. I don’t want to stop you from making your computer pretty, but it does slow down the system.

2)  For apps to open faster turn off the “Animate opening Application.”  Animations slow down the opening of applications, and also use up more resources on your computer.

3)  Cleaning up your hard disk is very important for power user’s as well as regular users because OS X requires disk space to run smooth and efficiently. Cleaning up your hard drive can be a difficult task when you have all your important documents scattered over your user area, so here are some suggestions:

  • Your copy of OS X ships with support for multiple languages, but do you really need them all? You can remove the languages that you don’t use, using an app called Monolingual. In my experience this app can free up 3GB or more of space
  • Also included in OS X is a large library of printer drivers, but do you really need them all? An app called Print Center Repair from FixAMac lets you go in there and delete those drivers you aren’t using.
  • Uninstall old or useless applications from your system, as well as removing all preference files associated with the app and other garbage included. Using AppZapper can solve all your un-installation problems by allowing you to easily ‘zap’ your applications off your system.
  • Customize your (re)installations so just those features you need are included, e.g. if you don’t use GarageBand, then don’t install Garageband sounds

These are just a few tips to help speed up your system, if you have any other tips feel free to leave them in the comments.

Didn’t you mean to add to the first one that you meant using large images as desktop images or something? Just having large images stored away on your computer in a directory isn’t going to do much of anything.
