µTorrent released for Mac

by Indraneel Purohit on Nov 30, 2008 at 10:18 AM

µTorrent, king of Windows bittorrent clients, has finally been released for OS X. Although in beta form, µTorrent looks fairly solid as a torrent client for the Mac. The interface looks like its Windows counterpart, but blends in perfectly with other Cocoa apps. On the left you have your Downloading, Completed, Active and Inactive sections, for torrent files that fall under those categories. The bottom of the window contains information about each file being downloaded, as it is selected.

µTorrent performs all the basic torrent functions. However, special functions (such as RSS downloading) that are available in the Windows version are not available in the OS X version. Like the Windows version, it has an extremely low memory footprint—it’s only using 11MB while downloading a torrent, at the moment.

As of now, I think Transmission truly trumps µTorrent on the Mac side, but given a few more months, there’s no reason why that can’t change. µTorrent is in beta and available for download, for free; Leopard-only.
