There’s a secret barcode on your iPhone

iPhone Secret Barcode
In what can only be described as a sign and/or portent right out of Revelations, it’s been discovered that iPhones have hidden barcodes on them. I mean, never mind that each one has a unique identifier anyway and Apple knows what songs you buy from it and what credit card you’re charging it to and can turn your applications off by remote if they want to, this is something to worry about because it’s kind of like something from the Matrix!

Ahem.

Anyhoo, according to Engadget, an Australian user…

...was playing around with his camcorder’s NightShot function when he found something interesting—a hidden data matrix code on the left side of the iPhone 3G. We’re guessing that’s where Apple imprints the serial and IMEI numbers of each handset…

Why was he taking pictures of his iPhone with a night vision camera? I’ll leave that speculation (and Paris Hilton references) to others. There’s another picture and more speculation at their site. Meanwhile, feel free to pull on your favorite tie dye shirt and start repeating “Do you know what this means, man!?”

    Spooky!

Psst - Bueller: tell this guy that the innocuous 3D barcode identifies a component part of the iPhone 3G. Hint: more than one such identifying label exists in the device.

    End of story.
