The ASA bans an already off the air iPhone 2.5G ad

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Aug 28, 2008 at 06:16 AM

iPhoneThere’s never a lack of things to do for the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority. For instance, very recently they had to deal with the very pressing matter of banning an ad that was already off the air.

It all began when two

likely unemployed and bored

concerned citizens brought the ad to the attention of the ASA. It was an ad for the Apple iPhone and it advertised the fact that the iPhone offers the full internet at your fingertips. Their concern was that, as the iPhone doesn’t offer Flash or Java, it doesn’t, in fact, offer the full internet. The ASA agreed, and said that the ad must not be broadcast again in its current form. Which is a shame for the ASA, considering they wasted so much time banning an ad for the original iPhone, a product that doesn’t exist anymore, and thus, neither do ads for it.

I hope the ASA feels good about their accomplishment. I know I’m grateful.
