The Apple HDTV rumors won’t die

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Oct 13, 2008 at 09:59 AM

AppleTV width=They’ve been around for a while, and they just aren’t going away. I’m speaking, of course, about the AppleTV rumors. As in Apple actual-TV.

Since Apple first put out the AppleTV, there have been those suggesting that it is only an intermediary measure for bridging media to the computer. Now, once again, rumors are kicking up that Apple will be releasing a TV that has an AppleTV built into it. I don’t get it.

What benefits would an Apple HDTV hold other than lack of a couple wires stringing the AppleTV to your TV set? If we take the Apple Cinema Displays as an example of what the Apple HDTV roadmap might look like, given their similarities as products, we might see complete non-updates for years on end.

The person spouting the rumors now is Jason Calacanis, in a CNet.uk interview. Unless Apple adds functionality that couldn’t exist in the AppleTV box now, I see no logical reason why they would sell a >$1000 TV that can do the same thing as a $200 AppleTV plus a TV of your choice.

Does this makes sense to anyone else? Sound off in the comments.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. Even with extra functionality, there’s really no reason for an Apple Television. Upgrade the Apple TV to include a DVR, and they’ll sell like hotcakes.

  • DVRs are 20th Century thinking in action.

They exist to solve the inherent problems with linear delivery (broadcast/cable/satellite).  Why don’t we just deliver non-linearly?

Upgrade AppleTV to do everything Boxee/Sapphire/Joost/XBMC/Plex does (or at least include the perian.org plug-in)!

    Investigate Miro + TVrss.net.
    Check out TVShows + Transmission.

Hell, just watch Hulu or SurfTheChannel and realize TV is dead, and the DVR is pointless in the age of non-linear delivery!!

  • It may sound weird, but some people like linear delivery. Internet TV streaming is still taking baby steps, it’s gonna take a while (probably a year or two) to make it’s way into mainstream TV distribution. Not everyone has the broadband connection required to watch HD content online at a decent speed.
