I know you. You’ve heard about the new MacBook and MacBook Pro, but that isn’t enough for you. No no, you, my friend, need more. You’ve got to see what’s inside the beast. It’s your lucky day since iFixIt doesn’t mind disassembling one of each of the above Apple notebooks. Sometimes, don’t you just wish you had a job like this guy’s over at iFixIt?
The unboxing, followed by uncasing of the MacBook Pro, contains a comparison of current and last generation models. Both picture sets actually give decent walkthroughs on the features of both machines. Plus, if you ever feel the need to rip apart your new machine, they detail every step they made to take theirs apart.
Some things to notice are that the new notebooks have black covering the entire hinge, including the wireless adapter region, so there is black exposed even with the lid shut. The maximum amount or RAM either machine can except is 4GB since the architecture it still 32 bit. The two GPUs inside of the MacBook Pro take up a significant amount of the logic board. That’s the 9600 GT pictured above. There’s no way that would fit in a MacBook Air. The new Superdrives are SATA instead of ATA. And by new, they really mean new; the drive they received in their MacBook was manufactured this month.
The Bluetooth receiver is said to be sandwiched between the glass and the metal case, all of which you’d have to replace if it goes bad. So, hope that your bluetooth chip lasts forever, it might be a huge (financial) pain to fix, or you could just get AppleCare.
Another potentially expensive repair is any damage to the top case assembly, including the trackpad, keyboard and surrounding area. Their sources claim that Apple treats this area as one piece, and replaces it as such. But, if you are adventurous enough, the keyboard can be removed, along with 50+ screws and some headaches.
Apple really seems to have two beautiful products, both inside and out. It’s really fun to get to see the inside of these machines without my nervous, shaking hands and the inevitable stripped and extra screws. But, maybe you’re not like me. Maybe you like to disassemble your notebook and put it back together the same way some people like to do with their guns, blindfolded. If I just described you, please make a video and post it to YouTube, that’d be priceless.
