Stop touching your iPhone, start talking to it
Fonix Speed, Inc has announced plans to release voice command software for the Apple iPhone. This application, which will be called Fonix iSpeak, will allows users to dial phone numbers simply by saying a number or the name of a contact. However, it goes even further. Users will also be able to use their voice to play a song and navigate through their music. Fonix expects this application to be released “...through traditional Apple distribution channels,” but we will see what Apple thinks about it in their screening process.
D. Lynn Shepherd, Fonix Sr. VP product engineering, believe users are going to love their software, and says, “The feature-rich iPhone is easy to use and our robust embedded speech interface will further create a positive and natural user-friendly environment which will further illustrate the dynamic features of this phone.” When she says user-friendly, she means it. The Fonix iSpeak application is client side, meaning that when you talk into it you will experience no network latency because all of the voice analyzing is done on the phone itself. I look forward to seeing this app through the App Store.

telling the phone what to do would be fun.

on July 8, 2008 at 12:12 AM - LINKMicrosoft has had a similar program out for years called Voice Command for use with phones running Windows Mobile. It is invaluable and I use it daily. It has become increasingly important now that my state has adopted a hands-free driving law. It has true voice recognition, i.e. no need for voice-tag training. Hopefully this developer has managed to make this program compatible with Blue-tooth operations as well. With MS Voice Command you can call anyone in your contacts and specify which number to call, e.g. office, mobile, home. You can also tell it to dial a specific number and play music files and launch a variety of other programs, e.g. mail, internet, live search etc. Kudos to Fonix for bringing this valuable application to the Iphone community
