What took so long? Well, South Korea requires a specific mobile platform, WIPI, of which most is based on Java. However, this policy was changed early this week by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), allowing carriers to finally decide whether they want to use WIPI or not. The WIPI restriction prevented Apple and other phone manufacturers from releasing devices in South Korea. However, with the restriction ineffective starting April, two providers in the country will be carrying the iPhone, SK Telecom and KTF.
The iPhone should hit South Korea in the spring of 2009.
