Seinfeld and Gates to battle “Get A Mac” ads: scared yet?
So, imagine this: you are a huge software company. You make one of the two major comsumer operating systems. Your competitor has a highly successful ad campaign that for two years has been beating your product up. The competitor’s sales are growing steadily, while yours are slowing. You decide it’s enough already, and you are going to invest lots of money in a rebuttal campaign. So how should this campaign work?
Microsoft’s idea is to hire a comedian who was relevant in the mid-90’s, and bring back their middle-aged computer whiz founder: Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. That should stack up well against John Hodgman and Justin Long.
Microsoft has invested $300 million in a new set of ads to combat the popular “Get A Mac” ads. Jerry Seinfeld was brought in for a mere $10 mil, and Bill Gates, out of the kindness of his heart, we assume. In theory, this new campaign has epic fail written all over it, but I won’t scoff too much yet…I’ll wait for September 4th, when the ad campaign launches.
