Run the Spore Creature Creator in Mac OS X v10.4.11

by Mark Rowland on Jun 23, 2008 at 05:15 PM

spore

For those of you who want Spore, but are still running Tiger, we’ve got the fix for you. With some simple .plist editing, you can be on your way to making strange looking aliens in no time!

First, obtain the Creature Creator. Then, locate the download in the Finder. Once you have it, right-click on it and open “Show Package Contents.” When you have that open, open “Contents.” In this folder, locate Info.plist, and open it with any text editor.

Once you have it open, find the following:

<key>MinimumSystemVersion</key>
<string>10.5.3</string>

And change that to:

<key>MinimumSystemVersion</key>
<string>10.4.11</string>

This should fix things, but keep in mind that Minimum System Versions are usually put in there for a reason. Doing this change may make you lose certain functionalities in the game.

Now, if only there was something like this that would let me run Spore with half the VRAM needed. Damn MacBooks with their integrated graphics cards…

This post is close, but not quite correct.  I have never seen “show package contents” and don’t know where to find that…  But instead you can first copy the “SPORE(TM) Creature Creator Trial Installer.app” directory from the install .dmg to some other location.  You need to modify SPORE(TM) Creature Creator Trial Installer.app/Contents/Resources/tgInstall.plist in order to install it.  After it is installed, you will need to edit the /Applications/SPORE/SPORE Creature Creator.app/Contents/Info.plist in the same way.

To find “Show Package Contents”, right click on any application in Finder.  The pop-up menu has it.  It is under “Open” and above “Move to Trash”.

Does this allow me to install the full SPORE game or just the Creature Creator?
My Mac is pretty new and of a good spec, We got it just before Leopard launched.

    it dosent say <key>MinimumSystemVersion</key>

    ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!!!

I took a risk and bought the full creature creator. I only have tiger yet it still worked!!!!! If you have trouble with doing this at all just look for any .plist file in there and if you see “10.5.3”, change it to 10.4.11!!! I am extremely happy! I hope you do this!

I found it, but apparently i don’t have permission to save the edited file, even though i am the administrator

I found the specified key but mine won’t let me save either?

  • Reed Moseng said:

I am administrator and it lets me save the files easily. I don’t know why you guys are having problems. Make sure you are administrator.

To make it work, I had to change the application association for .plist extensions to the TextEdit application.

Then, I edited the file Contents>Resources>tgInstall.plist replacing 10.5.3 with 10.4.11.

It seems this tricks works with the Creature Creator Trial, and I would believe it works with the full Creature Creator (from what Reed moseng says), but I can’t get this to work with the full Spore game. I could do the modification, but it still wouldn’t launch. That’s sad, really.

Also, to be able to save your .plist files, be sure that your install.app is not on “read only”. Or or .plist file, for that matter. Just right click-Show informations, to solve this easily…

this is how to run the full version of spore on tiger

    You’ll Need:
*Spore Install Disc (could be downloaded offline too)
*Copy of the Creature Creator Installer (trial or full version, both will do I think).
*Intel Mac with OS 10.4 (little redundant now) with a property list editor (should be built in, but can be installed off of OS install discs or apple.com).

    Procedure:
    1. Right/ctrl click on your creature creator installer, and select ‘Open Package Contents’ from the drop-down menu. Navigate to Contents>MacOS. You should find 3 files: tgInstall and two file dispatcher files. Make a copy of them, or drag them to the desktop.

    2. Make a copy of the Spore installer by dragging it to the desktop. Right/ctrl click and select ‘Get Info’ from the drop-down. Select ‘read and write’ from the ownership and permissions section.

    3. Take the three files from the creature creator installer and use them to replace their counterparts in the Spore installer (right click, open package contents, Contents>MacOS).

    4. Navigate to Contents>Resources and open the tgInstall.plist file. Open up the root menu, go down to Minimum System OS, and change the value from 10.5.3 to 10.4.11 (or whatever system you have).

You should now be able to operate the Spore Installer and install Spore to wherever you want.

    5. Now fire up your Spore application. Now it will ask you for your license code. Enter it. Now it will ask you to install all three patches. Do so now. It will take a while, but wait it out.

Now Spore will bark at you for no having Leopard. No worry. Now is when we dissect the Spore application.

    6. Right click the Spore application, and select Open Package Contents again. Navigate to the contents folder. You should see an info.plist file. STOP!!! DO NOT EDIT THE INFO.PLIST FILE!!!!!! Drag the info.plist file out of the contents folder, keep it safe in your Spore folder, and make a copy of it. Place the copy into where the original belonged. Open it up, open up the root tab, go down to Minimum System OS, and change the value to 10.4.11. Now you can play Spore!

Now whenever a new patch comes out. Delete the info.plist copy, replace it with the original, unaltered version. Install the patch, and repeat step 6. Why do we do this? Because if the iPatch updater detects any altered file of ANY kind, it WILL pull the plug on the patching process and bark at you to reinstall. As long as you keep the original info.plist unaltered and only for patching, things should work out fine.

This is as far as I could achieve. I have not yet discovered a method to install the C&C pack. This will require a hacker more brilliant that I.

    Well, Enjoy!

But do note, Spore is buggy! BUGGY! So keep a piece of tape to mark where the save and quit buttons are. I’ll let you find out why for yourself.
