Rogers, Fido to offer the iPhone 3G in Canada with a 3-year contract

Rogers Communications, through its subsidiary Fido Solutions, will start offering the iPhone 3G on July 11. Unlike mobile customers in the US, however, Canadian mobile consumers who are hungry for the iPhone 3G will be tied up with the network as they will be required to sign a 3-year service agreement.
Of course, we all know AT&T will be offering the iPhone 3G for $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) with a 2-year service contract. To explain the somewhat different terms with that of AT&T, Iain Grant, a Solutions Group analyst, said the 3-year service agreement was made to ensure that customers who will sign a service contract just to get the iPhone will hesitate to cancel the contract since they would have to pay a higher fee this time. Last year, AT&T customers bought the iPhone but did not sign a contract with AT&T and instead had their iPhones unlocked to use another mobile service provider.
Somehow, we agree with this explanation, but we are hoping Fido and Rogers will price their 3-year plan reasonably aside from allowing customers to upgrade their iPhone 3G in case a better version comes out. If they don’t, customers might wait for the entry of other mobile carriers next year who might offer more affordable plans for the iPhone 3G.
