Pogue not impressed with first iPhone bill

Back in June when David Pogue received his review iPhone from Apple, he paid for the service himself so that he could go through the setup process just like everyone else. Now that a month has passed since he first activated the iPhone, he has received his first bill from AT&T.
The first bill came to a total of $150. Pogue says it was filled with unexplained services and features that were never mentioned during the signup process. He was also billed in advance for July; This isn’t even the worst part of the bill.
All of that fits on three dense pages. But then–get this–I get SIX PAGES of listings of data tidbits that the iPhone has downloaded in the form of email and Web pages–KILOBYTE BY KILOBYTE! Every graphic on every Web page, every message sent or received–it’s all carefully listed by date and time. Not as anything helpful like NYTIMES.COM HOME PAGE or EMAIL–no, no. Instead, every single one of the hundreds of listings says the same thing: “Data Transfer” of type “Data” at rate code “MBRF,” along with how many kilobytes it was (usually 1K or 3K).
Maybe in the future some of Apple’s simplicity and attention to detail will rub off on AT&T. Until then, it seems as though if you have an iPhone, a 10 page bill will be coming your way each month.

How often does he text? My phone bill is usually 30 - 40 pages. From AT&T. And this is without data, and not too many texts. =/ If I get an iPhone my bill would probably be…. around 100 pages long. If I’m getting the iPhone, unlimited data and unlimited text are a must.

So far, I’m enjoying the electronic news, but the suspense as to who won the giveaway is about to make me keel over :P
