The Financial Times reported Tuesday that Paramount is poised to drop HD-DVD support. This deals a deathblow to HD-DVD and pretty much assures Blu-Ray has Hi-Definition DVD’s future. However, Paramount denies this article, saying that it will continue to stick with HD-DVD.

Regardless, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation extended their support to HD DVD last summer, joining Universal Studios as HD-DVD’s main backers. However, there appears to be a clause in their HD-DVD conttract allowing them to support Blu-Ray in the event that Warner Bros. does so.

Paramount’s possible switch means that more than 85% of movies will be released only on Blu-Ray, in essence a death toll for HD-DVD.

The new Mac Pros were widely expected to have Blu-Ray drives as a build to order option. That is not as of now an option, though it may be added on later in the year, or perhaps waiting in the wings for MacWorld.
