NVIDIA 8800GT option for older Mac Pros soon?

by Stephen Chinnadorai on Jan 20, 2008 at 04:29 PM

GeForce 8800GT A few weeks ago there was a lot of controversy over the addition of the NVIDIA 8800GT video card to the new Mac Pros. This was because owners of older generation Mac Pros were not able to upgrade their video cards to the 8800GT. The Mac Pro is stated by Apple as their most expandable and upgradeable machine - so this comes as a surprise to owners who thought they would be able to upgrade just about anything in their Mac Pros. Despite there being an upgrade kit available to buy on the Apple Store, this only works with new Mac Pros. Apple’s reason was to do with drivers and hardware issues. The fact that this new video card runs on a new standard: PCI IIe.

Earlier this month, a letter was written to Steve Jobs and he replied with “I suggest you calm down. Everyone knows the issue and it is being worked.” Today, NVIDIA gave a statement that a fix is on its way. The company is “in the middle of bringing out an upgrade kit based on the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT solution for all Intel-based Mac Pros.” What’s more, this upgrade kit “should be out in a few weeks.
