UPDATE: No promo codes for apps with a 17+ rating. Really, Apple?

by Josh Holat on Jul 27, 2009 at 10:32 AM

App Store Promotional CodesIt’s very well known that Apple has some major issues when it comes to what they are doing with the App Store. App submissions commonly take longer than four weeks (and may I remind you, some people’s livelihoods rely on this), and app updates can even take longer than two weeks. Furthermore, there is no way for developers to respond to reviews on the iTunes Store (although Apple has done a little bit to make this better).  And most recently, Apple started enforcing a strict rating system for applications. The worst part about this? Apparently, apps with a 17+ rating can no longer be obtained through promo codes.

What?! This makes zero sense whatsoever. The app has already been forced to have a strict rating, and everyone knows it does who visits the App Store. Why can’t it still be given away for free? The most important part about these promo codes is how they are used when it comes to getting reviews of applications from blogs as well as distributing it to friends and family. Come on, Apple, this is going way too far.

UPDATE: According to SlashGear, Apple has fixed this “issue” dealing with apps with a rating of 17+. Developers will again be able to give out promotional codes for apps with this rating.

This is another article like several others from around the Apple blogging community about this topic.  As usual, one site after another repeats the news.  I am glad Josh, the author, was able voice his concerns.  I don’t think this 17+ promo code thing is that big of a deal.  Certainly not a deal-breaker for me.  Apple is a private enterprise and can do what they want and I like it that they do what they want.  That is part of their success.  The vocal dev blogging authors that are unhappy are, I suspect, quite a minority as evidenced by App Store sales, Apple growth, etc.  As a parent, I like the things Apple does to limit illicit content.  Thanks Apple. I’m sure the usual comments will follow RE Apple’s monopolistic behavior, not listening to devs, the long App approval process, arbitrary App selection, restrictions on choice of Apps, not allowing illicit content, parents wanting to controlling children, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.  Same stuff from these blogs and comments over and over with every little thing that devs blogging devs don’t like.  And yet Apple continues to sell Macs/Apps/iPhones/Touches with no slow-down.  The consumers (including me) are happy.

This is not true. Avatron Publishing’s new medical reference app for RNs, “Informed RN Pocket Guide,” was just approved with a 17+ rating. I just created a promo code, redeemed it, and installed the app. Josh, you say “Apparently, apps with a 17+ rating can no longer be obtained through promo codes.” Where did you hear this?

Maybe it was true once but is not true any longer. Maybe Apple relaxed this restriction in the six days since these comments were posted. Or maybe it was just a rumor to begin with.
