With the recent problems bugging the iPhone’s touchscreen display, it’s about time manufacturers figured a way to solve that nagging problem. Thankfully, the boffins at Sharp have created a solution with optical sensors embedded directly into the LCD’s surface.
The current prototype is exactly the same size as Balda’s touchscreens, the main supplier for Apple’s iPhone (3.5-inches at 480x320 resolution). Using optical sensors allows the display to detect changes in touch down to the pixel level. It also recognizes gestures like “pinching” and other forms of complicated input.
Mass production is due to begin in spring of 2008.
