New theming app looks very promising

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Aug 29, 2008 at 05:42 AM

Architect“Architect,” a coming application of which only a preview is currently posted, looks to be the greatest theming app ever for your average joes.

Slightly Pretentious Software released a preview video on their website showing an application that is extremely simple. It displays three columns, in which you can find interface elements in Mac OS X. Then, you can drag your own images into the application to replace them. Your current theme is shown in a translucent “Quick-Look” type window. Once you have everything as desired, you can save your theme. The video shows nothing beyond that, in terms of how complete the themes are, or how well they apply to the system, all things I hope to find out very soon.

Of note is that this utilizes the Application Enhancer (APE) platform, which was known to cause huge issues with early builds of Leopard and outdated APE builds.

EDIT: That entire last line was, thankfully, in error! All the more reason to try it out.

Check out the website for the preview, and check back here for a review of the public beta, which you can try out for yourself on Sunday.

  • As the developer of Architect, I would like to say once and for all that it does NOT use APE. Don’t expect serious system problems from this little app. :)

Oh goodie! I’ll take that part out then. I’m even more exicted now.

  • Also of note (which may be disappointing a bit, sorry :() is that Architect is only for *designing* new themes. The themes are applied using the sister application called Façade, which will have its own preview available within the next few weeks. You can get an approximation of what your new theme will look like using Live Preview, but you can’t actually apply it using Architect.
