New iPod Touch to become more like iPhone with camera and microphone?

According to a new story from Wired, Apple is currently producing new iPod Touch models that feature a camera and microphone much like that of its iPhone counterpart. With these two added hardware features, it appears as if there would be little differentiation between the iPhone and iPod Touch in future models. Unless Apple is also preparing a big iPhone hardware change as well, all the iPod Touch would be missing was a cell radio to make calls with. That said, with a Skype iPhone app available on the App Store, the iPod Touch almost wouldn’t even need a cell radio.
While Wired says their source in on the money, I actually don’t see this happening. Like I stated above, this would make the iPod Touch and the iPhone too similar cannibalizing iPhone sales (especially given the iPhone’s monthly fee). I can see the use for a microphone, as some apps require it (not to mention Apple’s new Voice Control app), but adding a camera doesn’t make sense. With strict laws in locker rooms and other areas (such as the army) not allowing cameras, people would not be able to use their iPod in these places then as well.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not believing this one.

“but adding a camera doesn’t make sense. With strict laws in locker rooms and other areas (such as the army) not allowing cameras, people would not be able to use their iPod in these places then as well.”
Good point. But there is a restriction that you could enable to disable the Camera, remember? But who knows. They probably will add a camera. Kind of a good idea and bad at the same time.
on July 21, 2009 at 10:46 PM - LINKI agree this could be a bad move for Apple. People would just use Skype and then Apple would lose out on revenue on iPhones. The mobile network providers would not be happy with this but the other side of the argument is that you can already buy earphones that have a microphone from the Apple store. So whoever likes using the Skype app on their iPod touch is probably already doing it and they need wifi for this.
So maybe Apple have decided that if this is what people want and there is a market for it, then match the demand with an updated iPod touch and sell it.
on July 25, 2009 at 12:25 PM - LINKWith too many features in the Touch, I wold probably shy away from it. In particular, the camera. I want a Touch that I can bring wherever I go, including sensitive areas without having to leave it behind. What’s the purpose of a wonderful piece of gadgetry that you can’t use? Please leave the camera out.
