Until now, Netflix controlled the amount of streaming video users could watch per month based upon their monthly rate. For instance, a user paying $16.99 per month for 3 video rentals at a time could watch 17 hours of video form Netfilx’s Watch Instantly internet streaming service.
Come Monday, all of Netflix’s subscribers, except for the very bottom end $4.99/month plan, will be able to stream unlimited titles from Netflix’s library containing more than 6,000 films. There will be no additional charge assessed.
This streaming option should become more sensible later in the year when LG unleashes new set-top boxes that will stream the content directly to TVs. As of right now, users have to watch the film on their personal computer, which is not as enticing as watching it on a usually larger television.
According to reports, Apple will charge $3.99 per 24-hour rental, whereas Netflix plans to have the rentals last for an unlimited time. However Apple gives users more flexibility with the places they can use the rental, allowing the rental to be played on Apple’s handheld devices as well as TVs hooked up to an Apple TV and any computer running iTunes.
Apple’s iTunes Movie Rentals are expected to be announced in tandem with a new Apple TV the day after Netflix’s streaming change, January 15th. Appletell will be providing live text and audio coverage of the Macworld 2008 keynote.
