We all know that the MacWorld Expo is famous for one thing: the keynote address that has lately been presented by Steve Jobs. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple’s last keynote at the show. Well, there are four full days and a lot more information to absorb beyond the keynote speech.
IT. It is a billion dollar business. Just about every business in the United States is connect to the internet and or uses computers for point of sale transactions. This requires some kind of information technology support. A lot of small companies will call their local computer or networking shop for assistance. The larger companies, however, usually have an IT specialist on staff. Large corporations have entire departments dedicated to it. How does Apple and the Macworld Expo fit in you ask? MacIT.
From the MacworldExpo website:
Covering topics such as administration, storage, imaging, enterprise, and security, it’s easy to understand why they need three days. Macintosh systems make up a small percentage on the enterprise market, but there are enough out there to warrant training, and Macworld Expo is the perfect opportunity to learn and discuss such things as managing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Mac OS X.
Storage is a mission critical. Xsan is the perfect solution for large scale storage needs, but the equipment can be a bit daunting. Planning deployment, advanced configurations, RAID, and backup solutions are just some of the topics that will be discussed in the storage module.
Imaging is tough. You have to take a single installation disk (you can use more for a larger deployment of course) and put the image on multiple machines. Open directory, image creation techniques, and system image testing are just some of the imaging topics that will be discussed in the imaging module.
I could write and entire article on Apple and the enterprise, but we will stick to the Macworld Expo here. This module is going to cover such things as best practices for a cross platform environment, deploying various services, and iPhone management.
Security, security, security. This is one of the most important things related to IT. If your network is not secure, you are asking for a nuke to go off right under your nose. The security module will cover such things as firewalls, recovering from theft and anti-virus software.
As you can see, Macworld Conference and Expo has much more to offer than just the keynote address, and I hope everyone who gets to attend does more than just ogle the keynote speaker, no matter who that is.
