MobileMe a major spam risk

by Michael Goonan on Aug 22, 2008 at 04:45 PM

MobileMeJust when you thought nothing else could possibly go wrong with MobileMess, it seems that Apple has created a spammer’s paradise!

From The Register:

The email harvesting issue arises because every MobileMe user gets a public idisk file-sharing site. These sites have an address tied into a user’s email username. A user can’t hide or delete his/her public folder and there’s no way to choose what the name will be.

As a result spammers only need to map the iDisk domain using web crawler tools to extract the entire MobileMe user name list. Taking this username list and simply adding either @me.com or @mac.com will give an email list, Techcrunch reports.

This news comes at the same incredibly inconvenient time that MobileMe users are being bombarded with elaborate and convincing emails from a Romanian phishing scam. Wow. Just when Apple thought that the horrendous launch issues were behind them.

Of course, the idiots at The Register have now broadcasted it to the world of spammers.

Thankfully, .Mac (it’ll never be “Me” to me) allows for aliases, so I can sort the wheat from the chaff.  It’s been this way for a long time though.
